Default looking for a scale model

i am looking for a scale model of my ranger (needs to be extended cab just like mine) preferebly 1/24 or 1/25 and plastic not die cast

the reason is completely crazy and somewhat usless but bare with me.

i am thinking about doing some basic wind tunnel testing using a leaf blower and a little wind tunnel that i will build soon. if i can i will try different mods to see if they help or hurt the aerodynamics of my truck. basically i wanna play around in my apartment during the winter. lol.

the reason for thinking of this was watching mythbusters and the fact that i drive quite a bit. (12k in the last 4 months).

ps i dont care if the model is 4x4 or not. i can always lower the front to make it sit like a 2wd

I'm not sure i've seen a 98-00 plastic model around, especially in your configuration. I've only seen single cabs. However, I do have a few sets of the wheels you have on your truck you can have if you want them.

If you only need it to do wind tunnel testing why can't it be die cast? It may make your search easier looking for both.

I haven't been able to find any extended cabs except for the Euro style. I did find this regular cab. Maybe you can fab something up for the rest of the cab.

Good luck with the research very cool project... check out the hypermiling community for ideas and test that have already been tried... this guy is getting great mileage in a Ranger and the look isn't for me but you it's hard to argue 43mpg commuting to work close to 50mpg hiway and that's not the best as one hypermiler is reporting 84mpg from a Ranger http://www.whipnotic.com/latest/hype...rd-ranger.html

I don't think I'd be willing to go as extreme as that but some sublet mods of underbody air flow would be nice for mpg gains.

I don't care if that got 100mpg, you wouldn't catch me driving that around

not to mention that it wont fit in my garage lol

i dont think that a 93 will be close enough to my truck. the front is a lot different and im afraid it just wont suit me... like i said this is not a very high priority thing, i just wanna play around

thanks for the interest though!

NP, good luck with the search. It seems like 93 was the go to year for model and die cast Rangers.

I don't think the minor trim difference will make a significant difference in the testing...as long as the model is reasonably close it should provide a useable platform to work from

BTW LOVE the wheels (imagine a thumbs up smilie here)

I searched a fair bit and couldn't even find this one. It's the scale you want but besides being the regular cab...it is also the shorter short-wheelbase Ranger for 93. If in doubt..look at where the gas filling lid is. So you would want to cut it with the back side of the cab as it would be in the finished model (attached to the rear and box)...and make up the missing part of the cab between the 2 parts that would give you. You could do that with auto body filler I suppose. The shape of the 93's sheetmetal is little different than yours...not enough to make much difference anyways.

the closest thing you will find will be the 93 xlt reg cab, or the 95 reg cab splash. there are not plastic models of anything newer nor ext cabs. there is also a 93 4x4 reg cab.

i guess i could make it extended cab. that would be a lot easier if it was plastic. shortening the bed will be easy too. i can do that.

the wheels arent a big concern, right now im running the stock wheels that look just like ObsoleteE's pic shows. the wheels shown on my truck in that pic were 1970 factory ford magnum 500 mustang wheels. just had them layin around and they fit.

both the 93 xlt and the 95 splash come with a 6' bed, so you wouldn't need to shorten it, just make it an ext cab. which would be easy, you could just add a box to the back of the cab that has the same shape, and just add in a section to the frame. unless you want it to be a nice, finished model. making ext cabs aren't easy. LOL. i'm working on a 41 willys ext cab truck. started with a 2 door coupe.

ebay is the best place to find them anymore. they can be hard to find, but are usually on there.

You may find this interesting. Aerodynamics explained in 1936. They had wind-tunnels then but a neat desktop device is used to show similar using water and aluminum powder.
