Definitely get a second opinion.

Shop fees are ridiculous. I got quoted $500 to replace a shift solenoid on my old '00 Ranger, when the solenoid could be had for under $100.

Everybody wants money money money.

2nd opinion it is. And only doing the ball joints and alignment for now. I'm going to go to a few locally owned shops around here. Figure it'll be good to give money to the little guy anyway. Also, I think that a local shop would be more personal, and they could give me some info on the axle seal leak.

Thanks for all your help.

I would check at ford for the alignment, here ford does toe in/out caster/camber alignment for 59.99.

Alignment: $49.95 at Pep Boys

Cleaned and adjusted my rear brakes: $20 at a Brake Masters after a brake check and they noticed that my emergency brake cable wasn't connected and my brakes needed an adjustment so bad I was hitting the floor when braking.

Left rear axle seal: $115 at a local shop.

Cooling System flush: $30 and half an hour to do it myself.

Brake Fluid Service: Don't let them convince you to do that. My truck is 11 years old and been half submerged in water and the water content in my brake fluid is still next to nothing after testing it with one of those strips you can buy. Its a hydraulic system and can go a long time without being replaced.

Thermostat Housing? WTF? They're trying to charge you close to 300 bucks for something that just protects the thermostat? Ask them why they feel it needs to be replaced, if there's a crack or something in it I guess it might be time to replace it, but I'd definitely get a second opinion.
MAP program (a non profit group) is a good site to read up on. It will give you professional opinions on automotive repair, and things to look for in a garage

Brake fluid test strips test for copper buildup, not water content

What is the shops labor rate? Cleaning and adjusting rear drum brakes should never be more then .50 hours

honestly, if the labor rate is around $80 the estimates seem about normal price. I would still shop around and see what types of warranty they do with their parts and install. The company I work for has a lifetime warranty on parts and labor, and use MOOG replacement parts.

Also, a 4 wheel alignment in my area runs from $69 to $89, once again, depending on the warranty

straight from AllData

Lower balljoints call for 1.8 hours for both

Uppers are supposed to be replacement arms, calling for 1.0 hours

Napa (in Maine)

has a list price of $155.35 for the right upper arm, 176.84 for the left upper

lowers are listed 73.09 each (need two)

Maybe i'm bias because i work at dealership but you all are kinda missing the point of the inspection... 98% of people have never seen underneath their car. So inless something bad happens, they don't know if anything is wrong. So when they go in to the shop for their oil change, they do a free inspection. I know at my dealership we do a free multi-point inspection on every single vehicle, no matter what it's in for. For the most part, it's to make sure the drivers are safe. And inspections are also done so the shop can save their ass if the person ever came back. Just think about this senario. Your e brake cable almost rusted through. They do the inspection and they notice it and they suggest you replace it. You say no. Then the next day you pull the e brake on your car and it snaps, and you get into an accident. Now they can't come back at the dealer and be like "how come you didn't tell me this cable was a rusty piece of shit?" This isn't a real good example but you should get what i'm saying. If your vehicle needed maitance, wouldn't you like to be told about it? you don't have to say yes, but it's their job to tell you. Do you expect the mechanics to raise the car up, drain the oil, put the plug back and fill it up? i want them to tell me if somethings wrong. Does it cost a lot? yes. but sometimes that's just the way it is.

I will tell you this, I know for a fact that they are ripping you off as that should only be about half that if not less. I work at MCKAY NAPA AUTO PARTS so I know parts and that is way too high, get someone else to give you a quote.

yeah...they're full of crap

had the driver side ball joints on my 1st gen done for less than $200 parts and labor...
and did all my brakes (front and rear) myself for just under $60

all that flushing and cleaning crap is just how they make money....
and thermostat housing?? wtf? maybe if it was cracked i could see that being fixed for $50 at most

take your truck somewhere else...preferably NOT a chain store

go to your local parts store and ask for a reputable/honest private shop
or call around and ask for quotes

Give Mr Goodyear a break, his daughter need braces. You truck is ten years old and was neglected, you are in catchup mode.

I don't even know what a thermostat housing is.
It's a facility the Federal Government set up for to care for older thermostats that have blown off a little steam.

Personal experience, goodyear mechanics are thiefs and liars.

They lie and cheat on repair tallies, they lie about their own products. I was even told recently my chinese-made wrangler territory (actually made in the USA btw) were shit compared to their more expensive ones, and when i called the head office, they told me they have no control over the franchises.

Like everyone said, run get a second opinion, far far from gy.
