Default Question about Fuel tanks to fuel gauges....

So I have a sport trac cluster in my rig. Today it ran out of fuel while I was plowing. Luckily I always carry 5 gal with me. The question I have is this. The needle was only between E and 1/4. Normally I can get at least to the middle of the E before I really start thinking about getting fuel. The sport tracs have larger tanks, 22.5 gallon, does this have any effect on what the gauge is showing...? or a different fuel gauge all together...? I have only had this problem, since swapping over clusters.

As a note, My "check gauge" light is already on since I unplugged the oil sender unit and installed my pod oil gauge. I went out today and wired the sending unit wire to ground so that the "check gauge" light is now off. I will have to run it down again I suppose and see when the light comes on.
