A 2wd can go anywhere you want to have it.

When I was in college, we started an offroad club. I took my 2wd everywhere most of the 4wds went. 2wd makes you a better driver offroad. You have to pay a little more attention to the terrain and finding the right path.

The best advice I can give you is to know your trucks limitations. There are things a 2wd can not, like deep mud, deep puddles, some very steep hills, but there are usually ways around those obstacles, if you take the time to find them.

And remember to always have another truck with you, a couple Tow Straps (WITHOUT HOOKS!!!! and NO CHAINS), a highlift jack, shovel, and a spare tire!

they are great little off road trucks, just dont get it high centered or let it sit on the frame...

So.. you start by saying a 2wd can go anywhere.. then you list a bunch of things it cannot do and places it cannot go.

If you want to go offroading a 4x4 is optimal. 2wd is asking for trouble in many situations.

I said it could go anywhere I wanted to have it. I knew I could never run through deep mud or run it up a steep hill, so I never did. But you can run a 2wd as hard as a 4wd as long as you know what you can and can not do in them.

You are correct that 4x4 is optimal offroad, but it is not the only option.

I find this funny since the majority of offroad race trucks are 2wd not saying its not nice to have 4x4 but just sayin....

Try and go easy on it. Mud riding ruins trucks. If you want to a lot of serious offroading get on craigslist and buy a fourwheeler. If something goes wrong you still have a truck to go fom point A to B. If you destroy your truck you my friend are shit out of luck. I know you said you wouldn't do any serious offroading, but I thought I might just give you a suggestion.

I never said it was the only option but it would be foolish to attempt an offroad trail of sorts in a 2wd without a 4x4 nearby to help out... no?

I've owned a 2wd ranger.. I know what it can and cannot do. I know I definitely would never venture out into some crazy trail with it in fear it would never make it back.

I was using it as an example and I guess I can't off road my truck either since its 2wd but yet I do almost every night with no problems, if u know how to drive it shouldn't be any problem

Guys please, seriously, get this: they both are TRUCKS. They both can be taken on and OFF the road. They BOTH have limitations, they BOTH have advantages and disadvantages, and well, they both suck gas for the most part

So, let it be known that 4WD AND 2WD setups are able to off-road. They both are fun to drive, isn't that the point of off-roading? C'mon guys, we're a family here and we need to respect each other and the rigs we own. Simple as that.

This thread was started to discuss the stress limits that a stock Ford Ranger can handle off-road, 4WD or 2WD is irrelevant, stock is stock, and unless we're talking about the differences between the two, or the various packages Ford offers, this bickering about 2WD/4WD has no purpose and it is rude to jack someone's thread.

Drexl/WearyTraverler/POPTART972 have all made valid points, and it's only going to go in circles, everyone has a different opinion and that's that.

K sorry about the rant, anyways, thank you to everyone for the information, it certainly has helped me, and many of the posts on this site have helped me understand my Ranger better.
