Re: Got in an accident today.
Sorry about the accident. At least nobody was hurt. Beware of buying airbags..some are not worth buying..there is a lucrative market for them..some actually being garbage or unsafe. Proper airbags from a dealer are probably very expensive. Now some vehicles have as many as TEN airbags..if they all deployed..and were to be replaced with airbags from the manufacturer..that cost alone could write-off the vehicle.

I'm thinking the hard party is how do you tell if an air bag is good? You forsure can't test it

That is what happens. They my old pickup would have been repairable mechanically and body wide, but they totalled it because both air bags deployed.

It won't take much of an impact to total out a 15 year old regular cab Ranger being the truck is only worth $1000-$2000 tops.
It would not be cost effective to throw money at it.

considering the age of the vehicle the airbags being deployed will have alot to do with it possibly being totaled.

I guess my free time is worth much more than yours. Fixing frame damaged Rangers just doesn't make good sense unless you have way too much time on your hands. So I assume that you are insuring and registering those chunked vehicles too or are they just sitting in the backyard ticking your parents and neighbors off?

If the vehicle is repaired the airbags need to be replaced, don't they? I'm finding $139/ each X 2 plus labor plus reprogramming the computer, often replacing the winshield theat the bags crack. Some states don't allow used bags to be reused.
In all, a several hundred dollar line item of damage. That has a lot to do with totalling a vehicle.
To see how little damage it takes to total a vehicle visit copart.com, a nation-wide auction house for insurance company totals. Not un usual to see a light corner, quarter or side impact that you could drive home in total a $12 - $18K car oe truck.

Re: Got in an accident today.
Replacing the airbags may make the insurance company total it given the age of your truck but if you feel capable you could buy it back and fix her up... Still waiting on pics though

Not all vehicles that are totaled have frame damage... Pats trucks look incredible and I bet he paid a ton less than most of us...

I mean the fact that they deployed as an indicator of accident severity. It is not a factor. It takes very little impact to deploy the air bags, much much less impact than is required to cause enough damage to total it.
That said, I do conceded they are expensive as hell and may be worth more than the vehicle itself...

Crazy isn't it! Just because a truck is "considered totalled," doesn't mean it is that badly damaged. I had a friend with an 07 Dodge Ram. He rear ended someone and it wasn't bad at all. The air bags didn't even deploy, but the insurance company totalled it. Why the hell they did it, I don't know. That is just how insurance works. So, if the cost is small why shouldn't he fix his truck?

God forbid someone disagree with the almighty "dvrich", through my previous go-arounds with him i've learned that he thinks he is right even when he is dead wrong. Certain old farts like him with entirely too much free time forget what they were wrong about in the first place by the time its all said and done anyway.
