Hello everyone, I'm having a little problem with my speedometer bouncing up and down when im driving down the road. The Ranger is a 1994 3.0L V-6 Ford Ranger XLT Extended Cab with a 5-Speed Manual Transmission. I'm just havig a heap of trouble finding what gear I would need for a 5-Speed transmission. And what Company's sell them.

I had the same problem years ago with my 87. Bought a new one from the local Ford dealer. There is one that you can easily replace on the end of the speedo cable..the other is inside the transmission. Both (I think) are plastic and come in different colors according to the gearing if I remember right. I replaced the cable end one..new cable too while I was at it..hoping the one in the transmission was OK. Well that fixed it and was obvious as soon as it moved. So check what color the gear is on the end of the speedo cable..and order it from a Ford dealer.

Part numbers here: http://www.therangerstation.com/tech...peedogear.html. They're color coded so just match yours up.

Try a Ford dealer or online Ford outlet like http://www.tascaparts.com/

or Google the part number.

what is the likely hood that the one inside of the transmission is bad? My truck only has 117,000 Miles on it.

The speedo end one is cheap enough to risk only replacing it. That's what I did...fixed the speedo needle movement totally and I drove the truck a long time after.

also i know my 94 splash did the same thing when i had it in high school cause i floored it ALOT with the speedo cable goin between drive and overdrive undernieth the gauge lol

then it started doin that exact thing your talkin about i went to the local junkyard and got a different speedomter out of another ranger and it fixed it

ie i had sprung the spring in the actual speedometer only costed me 30 bucks for a complete gauge cluster

Back in the days When I worked at a dealership when I had a jumpy speedo needle,I would pull the cluster out and pull the drive cable out of the housing and and drag it through a small hand full of grease put it back in.That always fixed the problem. If you do this when you pull the cable out look for any shiny areas on the cable. they are nothing to worry about just an indicator of a contact area that grease will lube. All this said unless your cable is REALLY dry and binding I don't think your drive gear is hurt, and if you have already found it IS damaged, then you do need to lube the cable because there really should be no real Resistance to damage the gear.ps follow your cable and look for any real shape bends kinks or other damage . hope this helps
