Default New Ranger has a shutter?

Started fixing a vibration on my 2010 Ranger XLT ext cab with 4 cyl and 5 spd by buying new BFG tires and discarding the continentals. That solved 40% of my problems, then after the 3rd force balance (I was told that all techs were equal when using a force balancer-yeah!) I solved another 30% of my problems. Now I'm down to something mechanical that gives me a shutter or surge when driving at a constant speed in 3rd through 5th. I've apparently had two problems all the time. The 1st Ford shop said all rangers were like that from the git-go. One month later (and $500 lighter) I've solved 70% of the irritation and now looking for any ideas. It's not noticeable when accelerating-just at a constant speed from 35 mph up. Any help or prior experience on a new Ranger out there? Thanks!

question: why are you not using your warranty?
Bumper to bumper means exactly that. everything is to be replaced and or fixed during this time period. Hell, i've gotten new bulbs for free on warranty.

They would replace the Continentals with more Continentals. They gave me a small credit and I paid for the BFG's. The Continentals had the worst tire reviews I've ever read. I also paid for a balance job with a 3rd party tire Co.-wasted my money. I'm pretty persistent and hope I can find the problem. No one else seems to have had any vibration problems on a new truck so far.

Keep taking it back to the dealership until they get it right!

After a good effort from my local dealer, I took it to the selling dealer and left it for a week. They said all was normal and I asked for a Ford Co. tech. He drove it and said all was in tolerance.
Being as I'm an intolerant SOB, I traded it off for a 2011 4door Sport Ranger with V6 and 5spd manual. It came with Goodyear wranglers and I'll leave them on. The dealer swapped all my goodies to the new truck and I bought it sight unseen.
All in all I'm finally satisfied, but the truck still has a hesitancy when driving at a constant speed (I believe now that they all do, but most Ranger jockeys don't drive at a constant speed). I think the computer causes the engine to run lean for mpg figures. It's not as noticeable on the V6.
Thanks to Ford for the $4500 rebate to ease the pain of trading a truck with only 4000 miles. I was beginning to really not like a Ranger, but the 4door alone was worth the trade.

What kind of gas do you buy?
My truck hates cheap gas.
I've burned a couple tanks that I bought at a Safeway because of the 10 cent discount.
However, it is not worth waiting in line for 20 minutes and I have had the same highway speed surges you describe.
Back to Chevron for me!

I noticed with these trucks that the clutch for the A/C compressor cycles quite frequenly even if you're not using it. Could this be the surging you mentioned?

What hesitation are you talking about? I've had 2 other rangers along with the one I got now and they've never done that on me while driving them. I've got the 3.0 now, my last one was a 97 XLT with a 4 cylinder engine, and before that I had a 93 LWB with a 4.0 and all of them including the current one I have never did that to me. Try switching to a better quality and higher grade gasoline and you should notice alot better performance with the truck afterwards. It's that new technology shit that may be causing you problems and may require the midgrade fuel or better. Plus watch carefully on what kind of gasoline you get. The price might be cheaper, but it could be that 15% ethanol gasoline instead of the usual 10%. I've already seen 2 gas stations getting this 15% crap already.

It is more noticeable when the A/C is on and was definitely more noticeable on the 4banger, but the hesitancy/surge occurs when the A/C is off. You don't feel anything when accelerating only when driving at a constant speed in 3rd up.
I'm convinced that it has something to do with the ECM on only the late model Rangers and doubt that it is noticeable on the automatic trans models.
I use Sam's Club or Shell gas and don't think that's the problem unless someone else is having a problem. Almost all gas contains 10% ethanol today. Probably not many 2010/11 Rangers with manual transmissions out there to compare with because they are hard to find on dealer's lots.
I think that this Ranger is a keeper!

They are great little trucks. I experienced a misfire condition with mine where the engine felt like it was only running on 4 of 6 cylinders. Only did it for 30 sec. and then went away. No MIL (malfunction indicator lamp) came on and the problem never happened again. I blame fuel for that one.

Mine is a 2011 4.0 5-speed, but I don't get the shudder that you were talking about. Does it happen with cruise control? Obviously it can't be a tire balance issue or the driveshaft not being phased correctly. I'm not really sure..

I say the fuel was probably to blame for that. Gas stations are sneaking in the 15% ethanol crap now and not telling the general public about what they have for sale. I've already caught 2 local gas stations doing it.

Do you have the extended cab? It is probably best described as a "hesitancy" or slight "skip" when you keep it at a constant speed. Seems strange that I would feel the same thing in two different trucks and no one else does. Maybe I'm just a candy a**?

I don't feel any surges on my automatic except when I use the cruise control and going down a slight hill. I still have the factory continental tires on mine.
