RWD DOES suck in the snow!
Last night altogether, we got probably a foot of snow. After spending 30 min or so clearing off all of the snow I decided to move them. I started out doing OK then I got stuck. I have newer all season Michelins on it but it still managed to get moderately stuck. However, the Taurus, which by they way has fairly new tires in front and so-so tires in back plowed through the same snow like it was nothing!! I'm having 2nd thoughts about getting rid of it.

Re: RWD DOES suck in the snow!
welcome to the world of 2wd trucks lol. a front wheel drive car will handle snow and such SOOOOO much better than a rwd truck. Honestly I liked my taurus in the snow alot better then my truck even though its 4x4. Dont get me wrong the 4wd is nice but I mean when its just alil snowy out or icy and im just driving on the highway, I hate leaving it in 2wd n always having the rear wanna slid n spin. But I def feel your pain man, did you try weighing the bed down and getting some good AT's or winter tires in the rear?

Re: RWD DOES suck in the snow!
I suggest some weight in the bed (or pile the snow into the bed ) and a set of tire cables/chains. I have 300 pounds of sand bags in my truck.

Re: RWD DOES suck in the snow!
A good majority of the weight is on the front tires of the Taurus and a truck isn't far behind. It's a matter of physics. That's why I have winter tires, a heavy fiberglass cap, and 180 pounds of sand sitting in the bed right between the wheel wells. All seasons on a RWD truck in the winter is a damn near guaranteed failure.

Re: RWD DOES suck in the snow!
I have a soft Tonneau cover which 90% of the time I have closed. Yeah, i have heard of putting some weight in the back, I believe I will try that. The last RWD vehicle I had was a 1990 Cougar, and that was completely worthless in the snow!

Re: RWD DOES suck in the snow!
I got an idea!
Let's make 4x4 for the rear and leave the front with front wheel drive!
OMFG!
I will be rich!
Don't steal my idea or else you will share the profit off of it with me.

Re: RWD DOES suck in the snow!
I had/have the same problem, I haven't put weight in the bed yet but need to since the snow is so intense this year.
How bad does the sandbags squat your truck if you add 150-200 lbs?

My previous Ranger(1987) was 2WD/5spd/2.3L without Tarction-Lok (Fords version of a limited slip diff.)...I bought it about 3 years used. It had 3 Michelin all seasons and I forget what the other was. The original owner spent the bucks for Michelins and presumably wreaked one. Warm weather..the Michelins were great..especially in the wet. 1st snow though..they were completely useless. No Traction-Lok makes it far worse...slightly stuck..one wheel will spin..nothing will go to the other. If you don't have a Traction-lok diff...yours can be modified..even if it is the little 7.5 diff. Dedicated snow tires do make a difference too. Keep good looking mags for the non winter times...will help them last many years more. Snow tires on steel rims are what you want for the winter.

Re: RWD DOES suck in the snow!
well duhhh!!lol but put some weight in the back itll work i just put two 80lb sacks of concrete in the bed and let the rain harden them up and that helps so i dont have to put in 4x4 all the damn time

Re: RWD DOES suck in the snow!
So far this winter, i only had problems with traction one day; when we received nearly a foot of snow during a day that followed one of ice rain, so pretty much all cars had problems, couple major accidents all over.
Might be because of the tires, or/and the assists that came standard with the truck, when i take off the assists, i find the ranger is easy to control, sideways or not (teehee). I don't think i could control it as well if i had weight in the back, i'll have to try it one day.

A 4X4 typically has heavier springs than the RWD, so you will probably have little squat. Mine isn't too bad but it is noticeable. Better a squatting rear end and not getting stuck than a show room looking one in a ditch.

Re: RWD DOES suck in the snow!
My 2000 Ranger could not get up a slight incline with stock all season tires . I put 3 sand bags in and the dam thing ran great ! Not thta it would plow thru anything , but it was impressive . Never changed the tires as too expensive . My new 2010 is 4 wheel drive and I took it out on sand back in july . It ran great without burying itself . I don't have any weight in it now as we just got about 14 to 20 inches up here in Boston . 2 Wheel drive is working great as I have not had to use 4 wheel yet , although I did put it in 4 wheel a few times to see and play .
