tow capacity
i saw some posts the other day on here about towing capacity but couldnt find them again with a search. i got a hitch installed today and im gonna tow one of those 5'x8' enclosed trailers from uhaul up to san francisco area after christmas. i saw in a ranger owners manual online that the towing capacity for a 4x2 manual 3.0 is only 1198 pounds is that right? that doesnt seem like that much

Re: tow capacity
according to my Ranger manual....a 3.0 4x2 manual transmission supercab ranger can tow a 2,365 pound trailer.
my 4.0 automatic supercab 4x4 can tow a 5,622 pound trailer
with Fords automatics can tow more than manuals.

Re: tow capacity
This section of the forum has a Sticky of Ranger owner's manuals back to 1996, they will have the Max Towing in them.

Re: tow capacity
There was a discussion about this the other day, I believe that Ford underrated the Max towing for Manuals because most people don't know how to PROPERLY tow with them. But just to be on the safe side, I wouldn't push it, lol.

Re: tow capacity
my truck is a 2001, but ford hasn't changed anything engine wise, transmission wise since 2001, when they changed the 4.0 from an OHV to an SOHC

Re: tow capacity
Remember though, tow capacity is based on more than just engine and trans. Suspension, axle ratio, drive configuration and other factors go into it as well. Owner's manual is always the best way to find the right figure.

Re: tow capacity
My 2010 auto 6 cyl 4.0 is rated for almost 5700 lbs . Thats the weight of the trailer max . Thats not bad for a little truck ....

That's not bad at all. There used to be fifth wheel kits available for the Ranger. They can be pretty capable for their size.

an auto has a torque converter and a manual has a clutch that you will burn up from trying to start out pulling an extra 5000lbs. jus sayin
or if thats what you meant when you said don't know how to tow with a manual, as in burning up clutches. But still with a manual you can't do stop and go driving and cant deal with hills even if you are great at driving a manual.

Re: tow capacity
I have a 2004 Super Cab Edge with 4.0 and manual trans. I tow my trailer with show cars on it with no problem. I just returned from a 2000 mile trip with the trailer loaded (and I mean loaded), and the ole Ranger did OK. On relatively flat roads it is fine, but hills max it out. Still, for a small truck with a V6, I am more than happy with the performance of my Ranger. One thing for sure, pulling a trailer, empty or full, will absolutely destroy your gas mileage
