A 3.0 is not a 4 banger, it's a 6 cylinder.

No, I'm saying that if you want good gas mileage then you would like the 4-cyl. If you like to have more power you would like the 4.0. The 3.0 really has no place except for, I guess, it's easy to work on although my 4.0 doesn't seem too bad either.

the whole 3 timing chains of the ohc 4.0 alone is enough to turn me away from them.

I'm old and prefer an auto now.
I could have checked all the boxes as it doesn't matter to me anymore as long as it is reliable and gets me from point A to point B.

I still love the manual but prefer the autos now after years of driving stick. I guess I got burnt out on them.

i enjoyed the 5 speed in my 93 behind the 4.0 but i would prefer an auto over the manual though, especially with a tune.

I prefer the 4.0 and a 5 speed, simply because the 3.0 is slow, and i'm sick of all this electronic crap on the newer autos. Plus, Ranger autos don't have a good rep. But on the other hand, as before mentioned, 3 timing chains on OHC 4.0's scares me.

However, I really like my 3.0, because it is almost identical in shape and design as an old Ford EFI 5.0 and 5.8, which I have quite a bit experience working on. As mentioned though, worrying about the Cam Sync is a pain in the ass.

What really makes it a pain in the ass is that the passenger side cylinder bank's timing chain is on the back of the engine! And the cam sync problem didn't come about until Ford switched to DIS with the Vulcan in 95 or 96.
