Best I could do in five minutes on Google is find an article from 2005 predicting the end of the Ranger in 2010:

I have also been GM or nothing, but I now owe on two 2010 Fords. A few issues with the dealers (I hate people) but the vehicles are outstanding. they look, ride and feel good, not that any new car/truck doesn’t but these ones are mine. It is always possible to get a lemon new off the lot as well as a used one. I spent the last four years in Japan driving their cars/mini van and they were nice for what they were no real issues. you buy a used car from the lot just outside the base or from someone leaving and after 2, 3 or 4 yrs sell it back to the lot or someone coming in fresh from the states and it starts all over again. Cars, trucks and yes even bikes are machines and subject to the flaws of humans. The ones that put them together and maintain them. If your (what ever) is a lemon blame it on the people that built it, took care of it before you or even those that built the parts that now make it whole.
Ford and Chevy/GMC have always dominated the US market on TRUCKs and probably always will, BIG, small or even the in-between they don’t make bad trucks, but sometimes they make lemons that look like trucks.

Ford has a better overall avg in many yrs of not making lemons.

When I was looking for a truck I was deciding between, I believe, an '88 S10 with the 4.3L vortec or to keep looking for a decent priced Ranger. When I was doing research on the S10 I found out that the 4.3L 4x4 from 1988 got better gas mileage than even the new 4x4 rangers.

Give it a at least a six foot bed too. These crew cab trucks with a five or four foot bed aren't worth too much except maybe for picking up the occasional washing machine and such. You can work with a six foot bed when it comes to plywood, ladders, etc and not have them stick out the back too far.

X2 on the mid size platform. There are times I feel a bit cramped in the Ranger cab.

Wouldn't a crew cab with a 6 foot bed be as big as a F150?

My 96 Chevy Blazer got 20 mpg in the city, being nice to it! And yes a 6 ft bed would be handy, but that is why they made bed extenders and ratchet straps. With a 6 ft bed you could make it still a midsize

i think they use 6-1/2 ft beds and also the crew cab on a f-150 would be much larger then a hypothetical ranger crew cab

As long as a regular cab one with an 8' bed or maybe just slightly longer. Some Frontiers and Tacomas have them. The are the ones that don't have the rear wheels right up against the back of the cab. It's noticable like a Ranger with a 7' bed is.

if they made a ranger that was basically a small raptor, i think everyone and their brother would be rushing to get one. i think people wold actually prefer it over the fullsize, imo. more practical.

More practical, sick looking, efficient, could go more places than any fullsize, still pick up the women, could lift her to the sky...I can keep going on this one. But damned sure for us 4wd guys they make a Raptor version, they sure as hell better build a Lightening version for the 2wd guys!

Post Re: And WHY is Ford canceling the Ranger?

I'd say due to its lack of bein economical.........seen a NEW one bein checked in yesterday, Supercab 2wd and stickered at 22k & 14mpg city / 17mpg hiway. That's PATHETIC, as a F150 gets better mpg than that.

Also got in a 11 F150 Supercrew 4x4 with 5.0.....FRISKY animal!!! Sonobuk pulled GREAT when ya hit 3k.

I definately think its time for an engine upgrade at least in the model. I think more people would be interested if they put an ecoboost engine, or a newer v6 with some of the new goodies in it.

I just dont understand why ford did not put that 4.5L powerstroke diesel into a ranger or even an f-150. Could you imagine the power, perfomance and fuel mileage of a turbo powered v6 diesel...?

The problem is that everything is a front, they want the people to believe there making leaps and bounds in fuel effeciency, comfort, blah, blah, blah. The reality is they KNOW that they can build something that offers everything and would be just plain bad ass to own, they dont, why? because this ensures their longevity. If they built and offered rangers for instance with the crew cab, a 4.5L Powerstroke matted to a 6spd manual trans, they thing would never fail, it would go 500k miles! they would be out of business.

Why dont ford or any auto maker put on factory undercoat on vehicles going to states that use salt? why not all autos for that matter? They depend on failure of their products to keep the flow moving. Its just business. You wouldn't work yourself out of a job would you? I sure wouldn't!

They wouldn't ever put a 4.5l Powerchoke..I mean stroke...I like em but compared to others they got issues! And way to complex...back on topic...the diesel emissions laws are to strict for a vehicle of it's size to get a diesel engine. I know, I know it sucks, I cry about it too, but sad reality of a lobbyist controlled, idiot filled governing body that seems to have no clue about what we "little people" want, as well as vehicle manufacturer's that frankly in my honest opinion are not building a lot of vehicles I want to own. Thank you California for effing my every hope and dream over because of emissions. End Rant

I miss the ride of an old truck, where your kidneys hit your tonsils, but at the end of the day, fully loaded you could pull anything, drive anywhere, and still get home at the end of the day. Thank you soccer moms and yuppies for ruining what my trucks once stood for...rugged, hard working, dependability. Crossovers and hybrids must die.
