Default At what point will my Ranger stop breaking?

I've owned my '95 for two months now, and I've had the following problems, found in the following order:

1 - broken (cut by PO) brake cables
2 - failed shackles
3 - timing belt failure
4 - blown rear shocks
5 - needs plugs and wires (been misfiring)
6 - ignition cylinder failure (pulled out of the steering column yesterday)

I'm at the point now where I'm regretting having spent the $1500 on this thing. None of these issues are "lemon-law" worthy, so it's not like I have a legitimate gripe to pitch at the guy I bought it from. FML. (Ford My Life)

looks like you need to go over the whole truck and replace as much stuff as you need to. Inspect everything, and replace as needed. Sounds like it needs a good tune-up

Did you inspect the truck before you bought it? If you bought it from a dealer for $1500 not sure how you would think there would be no problems.

sounds like normal wear and tear items for a truck its age to me. how the previous owners maintained it also has alot do with the issues youre dealing with now.

that's where I'm at currently. I'm just losing my energy to keep working on it, it seems like something else breaks every week.

I did inspect it before I bought it, but I didn't check the timing belt, plugs (things I thought would be simple enough for a mechanic to do pre-sale), and key tumbler (never had one break in my life). I was hoping for a vehicle that wouldn't require me to go through it with a fine toothed comb and spend another thousand fixing it. But then, it's been a while since I've bought a vehicle and I have to admit that I am really out of date with the market. Apparently $1500 doesn't go as far as it used to.

I agree that the issues are normal wear and tear. I'm just shocked and disgusted that they've all surfaced within the first two months of my owning it. How lucky for the guy I bought it from that these issues didn't occur before he bought it (he probably wouldn't have bought it with the issues, actually)

well we understand were your coming from. shackles - alot of guys have had to do them, including myself (4) and my dads (2). Timing belts are common as are the plugs and wires.

My dad bought his 95 for 2k. Since he has put alot into it. Plugs/wires,shackles,shocks(4),leveling kit,BFG tires, toolbox. All with in about 3 months.

Thats just how it goes sometimes, buy the truck for cheap then you do the repairs on it yourself or, by a truck that has already had repairs, then it wont be so cheap.

Really, if you got a 95 2.3 5spd, paid 1500 for it, even if you put another 1k into it, you got a nice ride for 2500 bucks and no car note! I'd take that!

that's a good point, and kind of clarifying for me today. I'll just have to think of these problems as growing pains on the way to a decent ride. Of course, knowing my luck, I'll blow the clutch next week, or I'll lose the front U-joint and it'll pogo me head over teacup at 70mph.

Yeah, you'll be fine, at least this way you know what it has and has not had done to it!

And I tell ya what, we have all our trucks paid off. my 2 rangers and the expedition and it is a GREAT feeling knowing you own your shit free and clear and don't have to worry about a car note!

I can tell you this, my plow rig has 261k on it, original clutch also, as long as that thing wasn't beat to hell and had holeshots done to it you should get a long life outta that clutch.

i got a 03 fx4 II on oct 30th from ressler motors in belgrade mt. on the 1st filled it with gas and had it leaking out the top of the fuel tank. called the dealer on the 2nd and i was told to "f off". on the 6th dropped the tank to find a Effed sender assembly, and broken locker ring. major kinks in the fuel lines too. took a week to fix with finding parts and not what. had it up and running for 4 days and then had some really cold weather and apparently blew a hole in the slave cylinder. so its been sitting at the ford dealership since it was towed there on wednesday the 24th. weather and the holidays mean that parts havent been sent out, cuz they wont send out the delivery trucks in blizzards. so maybe maybe maybe ill get my truck back by wendesday.. had it for a month and have driven it for less than 10 days. buy it for 11.5k and putting another 500 for the gas issue and 700-900 for the clutch. needless to say im a little pissed.

things happen, and some get lucky, general maintenance will pile up if you don't stay on top of it. things u have to consider when buying a used vehicle of age.. My '99 had perfect oem paint and interior, clean n nice all way round. looked new. (was a steal at $1200). but all someone did was put gas in it and drive it.. took ruffly a yr to slowly (when I could) work the bugs out. I drive to Florida from Kentucky 1 to 2 times a month... it has to be reliable, and I trust my truck, it has made bout 65 of these long trips.

a little pissed?! I'd be buying molotov ****tail supplies if I'd paid that much and had that kind of problem. They'd either have fixed it for me, or had to figure out how to get it dis-lodged from their showroom window frame.

ahahahahahhahahahhaha. for some reason im thinking he meant previous owner. but if it were the parole officer, might be smart thinking on his behalf. i understand this is often referred to as decreasing the work load.
