The only comment that I can add is that manual transmission drivers "tend" to be more in tune with what their vehicle is doing because they have to be.

There are advantages and disadvantages to both transmissions. One could nit pick and hash over them from now until eternity and neither side will win.

I was told this weekend that the gears on the 5 speed manual transmissions are aluminum. Can this be true, or is someone just pulling my chain?

a magnetic plug is a magnetized drain plug for the trans oil. it catches tiny little grains of metal that rub off the gears and bearings so they don't float around and cause excessive wear to gears and bearings. if you don't have one they are available aftermarket.

meh, I tore apart my "junk used" trans I bought when I swapped my truck to manaul, after it failed. The gears did not look aluminum. some were steel and others looked to be brass or brass colored

They're playing with you.

There's talk of a magnetic drain plug, have you ever seen an aluminum magnet?

The syncro material is bronze/brass. Although Ford reccomends Mercon V, I'd bet a GL-4 fluid like Redline MT-90 would work great.

Sure but it's relatively easy to change needs to only be done 1 or 2 times in the life of the truck under normal conditions.
