Default Message Center questions

I'm sure you could answer these questions rwenzing (I would send you a pm but it looks like that is blocked on your profile):

Ok so I want to install a message center (from a 98 explorer) and use all the functions with my existing Ranger engine (already got the new washer fluid/ coolant reservoir with sensor).

My gas tank according to the manual is 16.5 gal, but the message center only has settings for 20.8 and 18.4 gal. I'm sure this will mess up the miles till empty and gallons left. Is there a way to get this to read accurately? Did you (rwenzing) switch out your gas tank (I think yours is 19.5 (stock ranger)) to an explorer one?

Also, I noticed the message center uses a oil temp/level switch/sensor on the oil pan. I'm pretty sure my 2.5L doesn't have this. If I was to get this sensor where would I put it to read correctly? Would you measure a percentage of your capacity of your oil pan and place it there?

Wont work due to the lack of senors on the ranger the message center needs to operate.

From Bob himself. He has his PM blocked due to the massive amount of questions people send him on a daily basis. Which doesn't help people in the future. when they have the same question.

The biggest potential problem is that the MC uses a fuel flow input from the PCM to calculate all of the trip computer functions (MPG, DTE, etc.). This is not wired on Rangers. Since the Message Center is not an option on Rangers, the value is probably not calibrated in the PCM and, for all I know, there may not even be an output enabled on that pin from a Ranger PCM.

Well the value is calculated inside PCM, otherwise scangauge and other readers wouldn't be able to calculate economy. On another forum a guy tapped into a pin on his pcm for his truck and wired it to his MC, and it worked. Ford makes PCM almost identical to each other on pinouts for certain years. They just don't add wires to the pins if they don't need them.

What I'm asking is where to mount the oil level/ temp sensor and what about the difference in the fuel tank sizes.

They do calculate it based on how much fuel you put in the tank and miles driven. It is not accurate either.

Every time you fill up you have to manually enter in how much gas you got.

Fuel economy doesn't use fuel capacity for its calculation. It takes the fuel flow rate and the speed. If you take the fuel flow ratio time/volume and multiply that by distance/time you get distance/volume which results in miles/gallon.

You only need to enter the fill ups to show how many miles you have till empty. You take the fuel economy times the fuel left to get the range. miles/gallon * gallons left=miles left.

Which is why I'm asking about the stock gas tank with the MC. Because instead of typing in a number when you fill up, the MC goes by your fuel level percentage and multiplies that by the selected fuel tank size (which is selected by what voltage is applied to a certain wire).

Hey STL can you post the link to the thread that contains that quote from rwenzing? I've searched and can't seem to find it.
