Default Rear Bumper Ball Hitch

Hello all, I just traded in for a 2003 FX4 Level II that I love! My question is about the rear-bumper ball hitch, and I'm wondering if it is at all useful. The truck doesn't have a frame mounted hitch and I'm interested in doing some light towing, four-wheeler trailer, lawn mower etc. Will the bumper hitch suffice or should I look into having a new hitch installed?
Thanks

Bumper hitches are pretty limited. Something like 200 pounds max. Your call but a class three hitch opens up a lot of options for tow hooks and such.

I only had a bumper ball hitch on my 02 and it worked fine
for light towing. I have towed up to around 3000 lbs with it
with nary a problem. I have a 12x5' trailer that I have towed
big mowers on, lumber, wood and oh yeah the gravel.
Done my driveway and needed some pea size gravels. Hauled
5 loads at about 2000-2200 lbs per load. My trailer weighs
in at about 900 lbs also. So yeah, it will do the occasional
towing job fine.

I would not trust my bumber for loads like that. I say luck was with you

do a class III hitch to the frame

Go with the class III hitch, I got a used one off of craigslist for $40 and they're pretty easy to install.

lol... Considering I was on my third bumber, I guess luck really was with me.

Seriously, I've had 3 bumpers on my 02 and not once was it due to weight. Not once was it even the trucks fault or mine. Simply put it's hard to keep people from slamming you in the back, sometimes, and it just as hard keeping friends from having
accidents in our own vehicles. Friend actually backed my truck into a building, geez.(Nothing hurt any time except the bumper.

But no, with the many many times I've pulled
a loaded trailer with my bumper hitch, anything short of 3000 lbs would not make me hesitate using the bumper ball hitch.

I do remember years ago and friend of mine, bought a new Chevy pickup. About a week or so later he tried pulling his farm tractor with the bumper ball hitch. Needless to say it actually pulled his entire bumper off as he was leaving the driveway. It was bad, but I couldn't help laughing...

That's the safe bet. If you got the money, definitely
put it on.. But don't be scared to use the bumper
hitch in the meantime.

Cheers,
Mike

unless it's got a body lift, then the bumper is useless all together it would only be mounted to a bracket that raises the bumper up and has no physical strength.

My 02 didn't have it....
But then again you can't expect to haul 4000 lbs in
such a way either...

It's not useless by any means. Just got to be careful.

My landlord has a 97 ranger and he pulls either 2 or 3 round bails of hay on a small single axle trailer from his bumper. been doing that for years.
