Default Ultragauge distance calibration?

In the manual it says to go to the Distance Calibration and enter
1.000

But my UG has 1.00 only two digits after the decimal point. Then after I hit the menu key, it shows the

x.xxx

Is it a print error and only the digit entry is correct place to enter 1.00, or using the up /dwn keys enter a number i.e. 0.98 then the menu key and the correction shows 1.001 and then do the process again to the the correction to 1.000?

Also I tried to do a calibration last night very late when no traffic, using a GPS. So after I reset both the GPS odometer and reset the UG trip meter, I started driving slowly no more than 20 mph and rolled to a stop just as the GPS rolls to 1.0 miles. I enter the correction as above. I did this at least 3 times, but after driving 5 miles it was clear comparing the GPS to the calibrated UG that the UG trip is still off. By at least 1/8 of a mile. That really adds up after 200 miles.

Thus I read it is better to do an extended calibration beyond 1 mile, the example in the manual was 3 miles. I intend to do something like 20 miles if I can find a straight enough road.

I think this part of the calibration process is not exact enough. A few feet of being off can result in a huge distance in 1000 miles. I understand it is meant to be only nominal accurate for trip/mph/DTE/ etc, but heck what is the point, my daughters Garmin 255w tells me almost exactly where to turn and shows the streets pretty exact. I think some kind of dump to a computer with software to adjust for calibration would be better?

Default Re: Ultragauge distance calibration?

Finally I got a another chance at doing a distance calibration. Very unhappy with the first attempts, I decided I would drive a much longer calibration run. This time it would be over 40 miles.

Studying google maps I found a road that I could make an almost 20 mile straight run, and with a loop back the run was 42 miles. I would be using a hand held GPS for trip distance.

I had already reset the UG to factory defaults and then reinstalled allowing UG to find the vehicle info/gauges, BTW the default settings were not bad for my 4.0. I had to go almost 13 miles before I noticed a significant discrepancy between the GPS and UG. At the end of the calibration run the UG was off 1.016 miles after 42 miles were driven.
Or if you truck avg 20 mpg x 19.5 gal tank the gauge would be off about 2 gallons of gas. In my case I would be running out of gas based on the DTE reading for the default setting.

So what is the point of relating all this. 1 mile calibration is NOT, I repeat NOT, adequate enough to calibrate the UG. 10 miles isn't adequate, 30 miles minimum. Will the UG be accurate then? NO, after calibrating I did a 10 mile test and while it was close I noticed a few feet difference. Next week I plan on making a 75 mile trip, and it is all straight highway, I will do a calibration for 75 miles and see how close it will be.

For those of us who care about our gas mileage and bought the UG to help, this is very important.

Sounds like something that is very susceptible to being influenced by tire pressure. A few LB low and over the 100s of miles of a tank, it might make the gauge a mile or two off.
Also would look like it should be recalibrate for tire changes too.
Useful information for when I finally pick mine up.

Might I ask what GPS you were using? Was it an actual GPS unit, or a GPS enabled phone?

GPS is handheld Garmin used mainly for back packing. It does great for distance, time, mph, etc.

I finally did my gas calibration and now know I avg about 19.5mpg driving around town, no highway. Today I had to take a load to the dump, and saw my mpg drop to 19 mpg, then on the way back it climbed to 19.5. The UG can really alter driving habits if you are paying attention to the instant mpg. I have alway bee big on not lugging the engine when going through the gears, but with the UG I am now shifting at a much lower RPM. I sure hope there won't be a problem later with carbon build up.

I have been wanting to try this after reading the directions. I was gonna wait till my next road trip on the interstate but I like the gps idea didn't even think about that.
