Do Rangers Have A Black Box?
You know similar to what the aircrafts use which tell what was happening at a particular point in time? I think some cars have something like this now but not sure about the Rangers.

Re: Do Rangers Have A Black Box?
Yes we do have them starting in 2001. The event data recorder function is integrated into the airbag control module to the best of my knowlege. I can tell you that the event data recorders only save about 12-15 seconds before an "event". The sensors that work the airbag system determine what an event is. It doesn't neccessarily only save it when the bags go off, but near-deployment situations also. They are not like an aircraft which saves hours upon hours of data that can be retrieved at any time. It is designed only for crash investigation.
They are not mandatory.

Yes, manufacturers and insurance companies can use the information stored in them to find out (in case of an accident), how fast you were going, did you apply the brakes and how forcefully, did you turn the wheel or changed direction, even to how loud your radio was before the accident.
Interesting stuff huh???

The data it records varies by make/model. They do not all show that kind of detail.

Re: Do Rangers Have A Black Box?
Interesting!!!
In computer time 12~15 seconds is a long time to record. By then the computer could read all sensors several times and store it.
Say someone was in a minor fender bender and the air bags deployed. The insurance company pays for all the repairs, so by replacing the air bags and supported components also replaces this data recorder?
Who can access this data? Police? I can see why data like this would assist in cases where the possibility of vehicular manslaughter is being investigated.

Re: Do Rangers Have A Black Box?
Not sure but I was told that my 2010 xlt has one . Speed , steering etc . , Everything is being monitored . I kind of like that due to all the nuts out here in Mass . If ever get in an accident , something to back me up ! On the other hand , I can see where it can be a problem as well , speeding etc . I think the Police , Ins co's and Ford are the only ones that can access it .
