I do not understand why people from these forums would ever buy a truck from a Dealer

imho. the truck that the OP was asking about is worth no more than $4,500 the dealer is asking $7,500. That is why I dont bother with a dealer.......the only thing they could do to help you in some states is take you to the auctions and if you buy a truck there you pay them $300. The it is a win win. I found a truck on CL last month for someone. it was a 99 ford ranger ext cab 4x4, auto. the onwer was the orginal owner the truck had 50k on it. it was mint. The truck sold for $4,500. it takes some effort to find one but when you do it is worth it.......

Modelgeek is absolutely right, going to a dealer indicates that someone doesn't want to hassle with the work of searching for the vehicle they really want, some might say "no hassle" = lazy. The dealer is making 20-40% markup, you keep the money and find the right vehicle from a private party. If you really want bang for your buck, get on Craigslist and start searching, use "search tempest" its a Craigslist search tool that will allow you to search more than one area at a time. Be willing to drive 300 miles to get the vehicle you want. If you find a vehicle a long distance away, besure and ask a lot of specific questions and request additional pics before you make the drive to see it. If you drive far you are not window shopping you are most likely buying, so you want NO surprises. If the owner misrepresented the vehicle you have to walk away. Have the cash ready, and work every possible angle to get the price down. On my Ranger, the owner didn't want to budge, the title wasn't clean so we went right down to DMV and I registered the Ranger there so there would be no problem when I was 200 miles away at home. I did manage to get him down $700 and agree to tell the DMV the sale price was half what I paid (That alone was a $300 savings on registration). Have a readout of KBB valuation for the model with the options, do searches to make sure you really know what a good deal is. If there are small mechanical things wrong start deducting from the price. Take someone with you so you have a second opinion, plus let them hold the cash or have the ability to go right to the bank and get cash. There are real deals out there you just have to have patience and look. If you have to have a vehicle for transportation immediately that changes things, but even then you may have to bum a right for a few weeks, and still take your time.

x2

I looked at several trucks before I bought my current truck (last month) and the one i wanted happened to be a twin stick level2. Only one in the area f/s at the time. happened to be at a dealer.

I bought my 04 (nbs) f150 lariat 4x4 with 58k miles last year for 14k out the door with taxes and tags. not a bad price imo

Well Scott, I'm not selling mine just yet. The guy I'm looking at this truck for just called and offered me 8k for mine (no kidding, with cash in hand). He has a 2.3 reg cab 2wd that he wants to upgrade. Who knows, I might just do it.
As for the price of the truck, I stated in the OP that I can get the truck for just under 6k, maybe less since the buyer has CASH. Cash price in my opinion would be 5k out the door.

Now buying from a dealer....... I bought my truck from the same dealer about 3 years ago. The list price was originally 10.5k. I offered 7.5k and was told to go suck an egg. I waited about a month and went back with the same offer, but this time I told the dealer "I don't have to have it, I just want it". The dealer told me 8.5k, and I walked. Got the call the next morning to come get my truck for 7.5 + t,t,&t. So buying from a dealer isn't bad, if you're smart enough to deal with them. Yes dealers inflate prices because if you're looking for a vehicle then you're already pretty much buying one, and they have you hooked. Too many people go in and fall in love with a purchase and get blinded by the dealers "good deal" with 1k off the price. I went in, offered and walked out. Be smart when talking to a dealer. Even buying "As is, no warranty" the dealer has a reputation to uphold so generally you're going to get a better quality vehicle than you would from Joe Blow selling his POS that he dogged the crap out of.
