2009 Ranger AC and Heating controls
Hello,
Just bought our 2009 Basic 2.3 L Ranger. When using the Heating/AC controls with the air flow dial set on one of the icons on the right, which causes the AC to run, even though I have not selected AC, if I turn the temperature selector up to turn on the heat, does that turn off the air conditioner or are they both running at the same time? The manual does not explain this or the fact that you have to select the icon on the left above AC to just get outside air.
Thanks for your help, Gloria

I believe the ac is only running when you have MAX A/C or A/C selected the others are pulling outside air in and the temp is what ever u have the cold/hot selection at

Thanks for response. No it doesn't work that way on ours, which is a basic Ranger. We just got back from the Ford service center for something else and ask the service manager. He explained how the AC/Heating works.
Another person asked a few days earlier on forum and it was explained that the top left icon on the dial is only used for outside air and the four icons on the right, the AC runs on all of them , but what we wanted to know was, does the AC continue running when the heat is turned up and the answer is yes they both run together, something about keeping the air dry.
We can only get vent air from the one icon on left of OFF and the manager also said on the right of OFF from floor icon. Anyway the question was answered but really doesn't make sense, should be able to turn off the AC when we want to, like on our son's Focus. Must not be good for gas mileage, but I guess that is the way it is. Would make more sense to just keep it simple, but sometimes engineers like to make things complicated. Certainly doesn't explain any of that in the manual, nor do the salespeople or some service people know it, at least the ones we ask.
Thanks again, Gloria

yeah, its always a good idea to go back to the ford dealer when you encounters problems cause they can easily help you most of the time and usually have the same complaints and problems with the buyers.....unless you have a crappy dealer

Yeah that's what's nice about the Focus, it an independent button for AC separate from the rest of the controls. And as you see, the AC is not just for cold air. When it's on it "conditions" the air, regardless of temperature setting.

Re: 2009 Ranger AC and Heating controls
This is the exact problem I am having with the 2010 Ford Ranger. Couldn't understand why the A/C compressor ran on all but one setting. It seems, somehow, inefficient, to run both the A/C and then have to heat the air. Also, as pointed out, it might reduce mileage.
This seems a reasonable assumption.
I am a very careful driver, in that I do not make fast starts or attempt to go much faster than other drivers or go much faster than 65 on the freeway etc. I have made certain the oil is changed along with various fuel filters and finally, have even taken it to the Ford dealer to see why my mileage on a 4 cyl engine is only about 15mpg. That is not significantly better than my old Toyota Tundra V8 four door w/camper.
Am I doing something wrong or am I expecting too much from the Ranger?

That's normal. The AC runs in all settings except panel only and floor only. Reference the purple wire mod in the other thread you posted this in.

Re: 2009 Ranger AC and Heating controls
Thanks FireRanger.
Only problem with the purple wire mod that I can see is that I would need to install an additional switch to go from a/c to non-a/c.
Not a big issue except that I am having trouble with Ford's logic behind having the a/c run in all other settings except the one.

Re: 2009 Ranger AC and Heating controls
It is all settings except two. Floor only and panel only. Having the AC run in defrost modes was pretty standard since the late 80's since it make a big difference in clearing the windshield. So really, they only added the AC to the one additional setting (panel/floor split). I find it annoying too because I like that setting without AC.

Is this true of all Rangers?

Re: 2009 Ranger AC and Heating controls
Since the late 80's the AC has operated in the defrost settings as well. In the early 2000's, it has been in the present configuration of all settings except panel only and floor only. Yes, all rangers.
