Side gates for a step bed
I'm doing a bit of remodeling on our house. I need to make some runs to the dump from time to time, but as we all know a step bed's hauling capacity is a bit limited. My options are to rent a trailer, or make some side gates out of plywood. Renting a 5'x8' open trailer is about $18 + Tax, that would make a dump run $40, instead of $20. I can make remove able sides with plywood for about $60-$80.
Has anyone made such gates, and can they show pics?
If you were to make gates how would you go about it?
1st thing I don't want to drill any holes or mount any hardware in the bed. The basic idea I have would consist of bottom, two sides, front panel, and hinged gate in rear. All the pieces would break down and be easy to store. The size would be as wide as the bed x 8' long, 4' high. The contraption would be held in place using the tie downs in the bed with straps through slots, using a ratchet tightener, and possibly some kind of rubber stops that would insert through the gap when the tailgate is laid open.
The rear wheel wells inside the bed are a potential problem. I'm thinking cut out that area and cover with old tire inner tube.
I expect to use the setup 4 to 6 times a year, so it would pay for itself in the first year. After 5 years would be about $500 savings.
Any thoughts , or help is appreciated...
