Default interesting encounter just now

I went to the store to do some shopping, as I pull in I find myself parked between a newer Edge and a 2 wheel ranger..

as I step out of the truck, the passenger of the Edge makes a remark about "man that truck looks like shit" referring to my paint job and off roading dents.

nothing major on my truck's part but this Edge looked like it's never seen a day of off road use in it's life, stock height truck tires waxed and such..

I turned to the passenger and told him "any day you'd like to head up to the hills let's see if you can keep up with me and not get stuck, I use my truck as a 4x4 was intended"..

the driver never said a word but just pulled out..

do we have 2 classes of 4x4 owners or am I wrong??

Some people buy 4WD so they can get around in adverse weather conditions... not so they can purposely go beat their truck up.

Well you said your piece either way. You probably take more pride in your truck anyway, since you actually use it and work on it.

Guarantee he wouldn't have said anything stupid if his buddy wadn't there. But maybe he was just inviting a conversation? Some people honestly don't know how they come off.

Some people, like in the town I work in buy those big luxury 4x4's or the f series trucks and use them as their commuter vehicles and it is trendy, The life long residents take their 4x4's anywhere, the woods, swamping etc. People want to make remarks like that should just keep their mouths shut, they are always focused on everyone else. I'm sure it has something to do with them lacking something in their lives...like mommy or daddy issues. Good response man, it worked and shut them up

IIRC only 1% of people or maybe it's 10% lol....use their vehicle as "intended" such as jeepers modding and offroading, corvette owners taking their cars to the track, WRX owners doing rallye races...and 4X4 owners lifting and beating the snot out of them....

Some people just don't understand.....and some are even dumb enough to make comments of adverse nature. I've never looked down at someone for not offroading..as it's their money and perhaps they don't wish to break stuff....no biggie....

I've seen the same snobery just the other way around...people shamed for NOT going offroad and having a million trail inspired "pinstriping" lol...oh well..people are stupid HA

What do you mean "as intended", or should you have said as is capable? I am using my new (new to me) 2002 4L 2wd Edge Ranger as "I intended" when I bought it. Which is get to work vehicle, haul home DIY project stuff, and when I get a boat, pull the boat trailer. If I go stream fishing in the mountains I might get off the pavement, and if I don't that is fine with me. I have no plans to romp through mud and over hill & dale. I had an 4x4 International Scout when I was in my 30s for that, and eventually grew out of that interest phase.

I hope you use your ranger for the purpose "you intended". Because a vehicle is capable doesn't mean the purchaser of that vehicle intended to do any more than maybe keep it in his garage, or whatever he may chose to use his vehicle for, its his money so as owner he can do whatever the hell he wants with his vehicle, as "his intended purpose".

The 4x4 owner with his showroom looking truck, was out of line, and the response was called for. Yet there is no reason to condemn anyone on how they use the vehicle they own.
