Cool 2005 Will Turn over, won't start

2005 Ranger XLT

Two times now my truck hasn't been able to start. It will turn over strong, but doesn't start. Here is what has happened so far:

1st Time - went to work, came out for lunch and truck wouldn't start. after basic troubleshooting had it towed to the house. We dropped the fuel tank and took out the fuel pump - everything looked good. We checked the roadside emergency fuel pump cutoff and reset that just to make sure. We checked fuses - all looked good. We put 12 volt directly to the fuel pump - worked fine. We tested the volts to the fuel pump - 6 volts just sitting there, 12 when we tried to start it. Not being able to figure it out we put everything back together and was going to focus on the engine side of things....but it started just fine. So all we did was take everything apart and put it back together and it worked.

2nd Time - pulling out of a parking spot in 1st gear, it stalled out and wouldn't start again. Don't hear the fuel pump when I turn the key to accessory.

What else can I test to make sure it is definitely (or not) the fuel pump. I am not in a place to take a $400 gamble on a fuel pump - I need to know that I know that it is it.

thanks in advance.

Let me add that there is no light on the dash or anything indicating there is a problem. I have not gone to advance and had them hook up a reader if that is what you are referring to. thanks in advance,

Mike

Try resetting the inertia fuel cut off switch? In '05 they had a run of faulty switches that would trigger at random times. I know I got one, and it would sometimes trigger just driving down the highway. You may even have to hold the button in to get it to start, thats how it went when mine went out completely.

Johnbaum13 - thanks for the tip - you were right. I went home last night, held down the button while my dad started it - started right up. I am going today to the dealer to get a new inertia switch.

Thanks everyone for your help.

Glad it helped. I'm currently running a "50 cent" fix on mine, 'cause it did the same thing. I pryed the top off the switch and stacked 2 quarters on top of the plunger, then popped the cap back on, holding the button in. Still works, and fixed it on the side of the road for $0.50.
