Default 2.3 help

I am brand new to this forum. I am looking to purchase a ranger within the next couple days. I am looking for an xl with the newer 2.3 l4 engine. What years should I be looking at. I want the best mpg that I can get but also don't want to spend to much. I found a 2001 but I dont know how to tell the 2.3 from the 2.5 i want to look at it tomorrw. Please give me some advice i would greatly appreciate it.

I just recently bought a 2003 XL 2.3 4 banger. I get between 25-30 mpg depending on how much highway driving is involved.

As for telling the difference, pop the hood and there should be a big box if you follow the flow of air away from the air filter that says right on there.

Is there a reason that you specifically want that engine?

The 2nd half of 2001 up to now will have the DOHC 2.3, 98 - early 01 will have the SOHC 2.5.

I am mostly looking for the 2.3 l4 for the good gas milage. I drive long distances for work and also need the pickup bed for some small tools. I have had a one ton work van for years and the cost of fuel is just killing me.. I don't need the payload of a one ton anymore and I am mostly concerned about getting to and from work for as little coin as possible. I have herard good things about the 2.3 and figured the base model manual tranny is what would suit me fine. Are all of the fuel ratings from the later 2001 2.3 l4 models till the present the same or have they changed anything in recent years that allows the newer models to get better mpg? Does anyone know the payload of a base model ranger xl with a 2.3? If I get a 2001 what are the differences under the hood that will help me decifer between the 2.5 and the 2.3?Are these good reliabel engines? Are they easy to wrench on?

I see...good reasoning. I'm not aware of any recent changes that would affect this, but I'm no expert. As I said it will be quite apparent which engine is in there...it blatantly says on the box I described in my first post.
