Default My P0171 code fix. Beware of Dealership's solution.

My CEL came on about a month ago. I took it to the parts store to get a readout to tell me what code(s) I had. The reader said P0171 Lean Bank 1. So I started by cleaning out the MAF sensor, that didn't work so I've been driving it around until I had time to check for a vacuum leak. Well yesterday I looked under the hood and found the problem. A 3/4" elbow for a vacuum line was split, this elbow was underneath my radiator hose and I didn't see it at first. I ran to the parts store (Advanced) to replace and they told me it was only available at dealership. Regular 3/4" hose wouldn't work it would just kink up. I drove to local Ford dealer and they wanted to sell me an entire kit for $32.00! I laughed said no thanks and went to Autozone. Talked to the manager there and he hooked me up with a piece of 3/4" radiator hose that's formed to a 90 degree elbow and two hose clamps for $8.00. Trimmed it to the size of the original elbow, hooked it all up, and truck is running fine once again.

Side of engine where leak was. (Yes I know that's bank 1)

Close up of split elbow. Replacement looks almost identical only slightly longer. Don't get taken at the dealership by buying the kit unless you have to.

Thats a common issue on the 4.0. Best thing on any lean code is to check for a vacume leak before replacing any parts. I had two codes on mine for left and right bank running lean when I found that this part was bad on ine as well. Here is the Ford part # for the new elbow.

elbow part # F8UZ-6762-AA

My 00' Taurus had the same issue as well on the 3.0 duratec. A 90 degree elbow split right on the inside bend, directly under the intake manifold, looked like it was burned. I did buy the dealership part ( $28) and what i got was a reinforced replacement that kept the line from sucking in on itself. Tried the diy method but the suction warped the line that i replaced.

Thanks, if my fix doesn't hold for some reason I'll go back to the dealership and order this part. I can't believe they tried to get me to order a complete set of hoses to replace one bad elbow.
