Default upgrade

HI from a newbie

I have a 97 ranger regular cab with 4 cly 2.3L automatic trans and I'm seriously considering swapping it out with a 6 cly 3.0. How smart and what would be the difficulty and ballpark on cost is my concerns.

The truck is good shape and suits me fine except for the 2.3 just doesn't have the giddy up.

If u can find a good running truck with a 3.0 in for cheap buy the whole truck

U will need wiring harness and computer for the swap some junkyards dont offer those with engine

Will have more power but gas mileage will be changed

2.3
horsepower 112 @ 4800 RPM (1996 - 1997)
torque 135 @ 2400 RPM (1996 - 1997)

3.0
horsepower 147 @ 5000 RPM (1996 - 1997)
torque 135 @ 2400 RPM (1996 - 1997)

I believe there is a wide range of years that work

Not positive on transmission I think they are the same

If you're going to do an engine swap, why not go with the 4.0?

What is the difference in mileage and power etc.? I just figured the smaller displacement would equate to better mileage?

You'd be much better off with the 4.0L. You would probably find that the 3.0L doesn't have much giddy up either.

Thanks Jay
Do you know off hand what the horsepower and torque is for the 4.0 compared to the 3.0

3.0
horsepower 147 @ 5000 rpm
torque 135@2400

its funny cause the 3.0 has more hp then the 2.3 but the tourque is almost identical...however, i would definatley reccomend teh 4.0L as it would have lots of tourque to get you going and just as much hp...also, the 4.0 may use a little more gas then the 3.0 but it will be worth it and youll always have enough power

the tranny will be different. the tranny for the 2.3l is a little bit smaller than the others. All of the transmissions used in the v6 rangers (i.e. the 3.0 and 4.0) are identical.

With gas at $3.65 a gallon you will regret that.
