Default New Ranger Tomorrow, Advice and Opionions Please

Hey guys I am about to be getting, tomorrow, a 2008 Ranger Work Truck with 40K on the 2.3L and 5-spd auto.

Now i come from the audi forums and am pretty decent around the VW and Audi world, but don't have a damn clue about anything to do with this truck haha.

Basically what do you guys think of this model truck? Reliability is key, even tho it is a company truck i gotta keep it running for a while.

Also I was wondering what MODS (besides the ones in the beginner's thread), mostly things that give it a little more pick-up, and better gas milage. I already am planning on getting a Tonno Pro tri-fold Taunnou Cover, that should put me up to about 30MPG but I want as much as possible. Also has anyone tried this cover? thoughts/opinions.

Thanks Guys I'll be spending a lot more time on here learning and playing with the truck!

It should be a solid truck, the 2.3L gets great mileage and can last quite a while. With regards to the cover changing your gas mileage, don't expect anything spectacular, they don't really do much. I had one on my truck, and when I switched to a cap the mileage didn't change at all.

Good luck, and welcome to the site.

Sean

Congratulations on what can be a gratifying vehicle. I say do nothing for some time and you will soon have a list of irritating things which need addressing and a list of niceities which would would improve your pride in the truck. If you start acting on both lists too soon, you are prone to solving them in less than satisfactory fashion plus you will end up spending money in the wrong places. Patience my friend. Incidentally, I've seen many tests contrary to common sense which surprised me about the gas mileage being being better stock, no cover, no holey or missint tail gate. Seems Ford engineers actually wind-tunnel the trucks and alter the bed shape and cab height for best mileage. Surprised me. Course aftermarket people aren't known for truth in advertising.

Mythbusters actually tested the theory of removing the tailgate and MPG...IIRC they found that trucks are built, tested, and such WITH the tailgate on..removing it does nothing if makes it a worse mpg.....

With proper maintenance you should get another 200,000 miles out of that truck.

The 4cyl has decent power & great fuel mileage.

I did see that episode, and yes they busted the tailgate myth, but i dont recall them using a tannou cover. Either way I have to get one for security purposes.
