Default im a little sore after this one..

alright, so friday night im crusin in the ranger and the brakes start grinding. bad. So i would've taken it to the shop the next day to have the pads changed but i couldn't because i was required to attend my college's first home game. Well today i was finally able to take it to the shop. Keep in mind that I only drove it twice less than 2 miles since the brakes started grinding. The guy comes out after an hour and says i need new pads(duh) and i also need new rotors. No way do i need rotors after only 4 miles of driving with bad pads. He wants $411 for pads and rotors, i say no way just put pads on it. he charges $175 for a PAD REPLACEMENT!! wtf! i paid $70 for new pads on my old truck back home.. im just lucky i wasnt stupid enough to think i needed new rotors.. my brakes are like new again with new pads and the same rotors.. i still think i got screwed.. what do you guys think?

Yeah, should have done it on your own. People try to bend you over left and right for that kind of stuff!

i would have replaced the rotors too. any steel on steel will destroy a rotor in a heartbeat. plus you have to keep in mind its a liability issue with the shop too because brakes are a safety item. i dont blame them for replacing them. did you get ripped off? yes you did only because you paid someone to do your brakes for you.

the rotors may have needed to be machined. regardless of the 4 miles you drove on bad pads, the other thousands of miles you have driven may have taken their toll on them. the rotors, just like the pads, wear out over time. your truck is 5 years old (according to your sig), and unless they have been changed in the near past, they may be worn out. you got hosed in the front pad replacement. for 20 minutes of work, he made a killing.

What they said, plus you can wear a rotor down beyond spec for even having them machined so you would have to replace them anyway, or you face warping them and rework. Mine had bad grooves in them so I replaced them.

And what good mechanical do-it-yourselfer leaves their tools at home!!

$175 is cheap for front pads. They charge about $250-$300 for that here.

Not true, you don't flunk out of college by not attending a game. Plus you didn't have to take your truck to the game.

Not true, it only takes 20 feet to scar the rotors.

If your rotors are compromised with scars, you are in fact stupid to think you don't need rotors. Did you examine them for warping and explore turning the rotors. You must have a great job to afford paying someone to put on pads.

I think you need to get screwed some more because you obviously haven't learned anything. Whoever was responsible for raising you screwed you from basic way of treating your vehicle and for treating your money by throwing it about and for treating the poor mechanic who only did what you asked. Did you get an estimate first? Mistake again. How did you get out of high school?

WTF?? I don't know what universe you are in, but in this one here brake shops are the biggest rip-off going. I had to have a shop do my front pads last month because I didn't have time to do it myself. The back drums were completely rebuilt less than 6 months ago. The shop i brought it too called and told me the back was in pretty bad shape, really old, and needed to be done as well. They were lying through their teeth. They do that crap all the time.

x2 paul theres no need to go on a rant..
1. I AM required to go to the game because im in a fraternity
2Fuck you I was taught how to take care of a vehicle.

i mean wtf am i supposed to do? I have no tools with me and even if I did am I supposed to take off my tires , pads and rotors and inspect/replace them in the parking lot? That was the whole point of this thread. I was stating that i got screwed because I had to bite the bullet on this one..

Ive done brakes, fuel pump, oil, and radiator flush in an apartment parkinglot...Ya, its a SOB, but it can be done...I take my truck to my work and do it in their parkinglot when I cant use my buddy's garage now, since I live in the hood and only open my truck to get in and out of here...

Hell, a friend of mine went to Les Schwab and was quoted $1100 for a complete brake overhaul, bull. Told him i'd do the job for the cost of the parts and to show him how to work on his own vehicle for the next time. Guess he went for the more expensive option.

Imagine this scenario, your about 500 miles from home and your brakes start seizing up due to water seeping into the brake caliper over time. This caused them to rust internally and the only option is the parking lot at Schucks, stuck with limited tools. Do you call a tow truck and get hauled to the local repair shop? Be prepared to shell out some major money for that one, on the other hand, being fortunate enough to make it to the parts store and having just the basic tools on hand got me back on the road in about 45 minutes. Never know when it'll happen...

I hardly ever have the money for a towtruck...I always keep my chilton in the car with me incase of such scenario...It would be cheaper to buy the tools you need than have it towed and have a mech work on it.
