Default 2010 super cab 2.3 is a good choice?

Hi guys! I'm about to buy a brand new 2010 ranger and want your advise. My choice stop on the supercab 2.3 for fuel economy. Majority of time the truck will not be charge and use for normal town/higway. I will not tow with this truck and do not need a big motor... A guy told me that the 2.3 will do the same MPG that a v6 do.. hard to believe.... I want to make a good buy, not regret it....

tnx!

Julien

I think its a good choice, seeing as how you won't really need a V6 for anything that you'll be doing.

If you get a V6 you'd always have the option to do more, more power, and cooler. IMO.

Congrats on a brand new truck though.

Julien,

I do agree that a 4cl would do fine for what you're wanting to use it for. However, something a bit bigger would give you more options. How long are you planning on keeping the truck? Do you forsee only using it for town/highway driving the entire time you have it, with no towing? If so, 4cl will work great.

I had two 4cl Rangers, both of which I loved. The gas mileage was pretty good (better than my 3.0 and 4.0). Never had any issues with lack of power, but never tried towing anything with them either.

From what I read on here and my limited experience, a V6 will not get you the same mileage as a Duratec 4. Have had my 2010 2.3/M5 for only 3 weeks, reg. cab, and I do tow light loads with no problems. I can't see the super cab getting a lot different mileage or lower power feeling than my reg. cab. First tank highway driving got about 31 mpg. Last couple tanks averaged 24-25 mpg mostly suburb driving.

My V6 Frontier was lucky to average 15-16 mpg with the same useage. Are you looking at a 5 spd or auto

Tnx for the answer....I will go for a manual if I choose the 2.3..... the mpg is better with manual and from what I read the power too.... I think I want the best of both world (car/truck) and the 2.3 will get me this (or close to!)

A couple people on this site have a 2.3 5 speed newer model rangers. They all have reported over 26 mpg in them.

If I recall they said shifting at 2500rpm is the key in them.

While the 2.3 is good for fuel economy, the 4.0 allows you to do more and isn't much of a sacrifice on gas.

The only reason i got a V6 is the obscene rebates we had here. I would have been as happy with a 4cyl.
Since you don't need it for everyday heavy lifting, you will certainly be happy with the smaller, much more economical engine.

I have the 2.3 5-speed, and love it! I had 1/2 yard of rocks in back of the truck, had no issue with power.

I am avg 25mpg with mostly city driving, highway I get 32mpg.

I have nothing to tow so never looked at the V-6.

Even if you tow light loads the I4 is good enough. The fuel economy is the same for both regular cab and 2dr extended. The 2dr extended cab has a large fuel tank at 19.5 gallons vs 17 for regular cab. If you do end up towing the automatic transmission can actually handle more than the manual. What is also interesting is the standard cab's carrying capacity and towing capacity is actually slightly more than the extended. For regular cab payload is 1160lbs and towing is 1540lbs. For extended cab payload is 1400lbs and towing is 1320lbs. For the standard cab there actually is plenty of room for the driver and one passenger. The 2dr offers a little bit more room. The main use for the 2dr extended is for storing weather sensitive equipment or preventing theft of smaller items. The latter is if you don't have a box. I wouldn't get standard cab because the 7ft bed is discontinued. From what I understand the 2dr now comes standard with the jump seats which are pretty much useless. As far as engine power you will not have a problem with the I4.

According to my ownner's manual, the Reg cab short bed has a 16.5 gal tank, Reg cab long bed has a 20 gal tank and the ext cab has a 19.5 gal tank. And yes in 1998, they made the Reg cabs a little bit more roomier than before.

That information I have is for the 2010 year models. That information is also taken off Ford's official website. http://www.fordvehicles.com/trucks/r...ns/capacities/

I get 17-18 mpg with my 2010 Ranger Sport 4X4 4.0 auto with 1,800 miles on it . Thats mixed driving and believe me I'm not even trying to get good gas mileage.
