Default Engine life

With suggested routine maintenance, what should be the life expectancy in miles of the Ranger L-4 and V-6 engines? I see alot of them advertised for sale with over 200,000 miles on the original engine. Is this a rarity or can this be expected?

The key is proper maintenance.

But don't expect wear and tear items not to go. There are some people that have to bitch because they needed new brakes, coolant, belts, and stuff like that. I'm willing to bet that these are the same people that only keep a vehicle for three years and trade it in. "Hell, I never needed to do anything to it but change the oil!"

Quite honestly I don't know. My B2300 has 202,000+ on it and is still going strong. And really very little maintenance.

I think modern engines can push up to 500,000 miles with proper normal maintenance, but if you take extra care of them you can go further with them

I own a 2001 3.0 v-6 with over 199,000. I just had to replace the water pump, thermostat, and radiator. Truck runs very good! My mechanic said there is still alot of compression and motor is running strong!

I just had my 2.5L rebuild $1050.00 and it had 280,000 miles on it... Wooohooo.. I have autozone lifetime parts whenever I can. Autozone don't make money on me. Three altanators, 10 brakes, 2 power steering, etc.

Before I traded her, I had a 1998 Ranger 4X4 5 speed 4.0L OHV. 200k - I rebuilt the trans and rear end, bushings, ball joints, shocks, and 1 battery. It had no leaks at all not even from the valve covers, original hoses, water pump, alternator, radiator and pretty much everything else underneath the hood was still factory. It's all about the maintenance, and how you drive it.

261k on mine, have done water pump (my fault), valve cover gaskets, normal tune-ups, brakes, etc.. But, still runs great and drives great, no leaks, no burning oil, no using oil. Just runs.

When you do go to replace an engine, where do you get your replacement from?

Unless something catastrophic happens like a head gasket blows and damages a piston or two, you shouldn't have to.

The above happened to the Ranger I bought at 183,000 miles. I found an engine at a junk yard with 83,000 miles on it and put it in. I think I paid $350 for it but I did all the install work myself.

The key to keeping your truck running is all determined by how well you take care of it. My 2004 Ranger has over 109,000 miles on it. It's also on it's 4th engine due to geico's stupidity. They sent me 2 polished piles of shit. The factory engine dropped a rod due to faulty bearings. The 4th engine was a 50,000 mile salvage motor. It's still going strong. I've been through 3 sets of brakes, 4 clutches, 2 drive belts, 2 fuel pumps, and I change the oil on a regular basis. When it does come time for an engine rebuild, use forged components instead of the stock ones but keep the same size, and switch to TOTAL SEAL GAPLESS PISTON RINGS. I just recently spent around $1,300 on new brakes, ball joints, tierods, I had the rearend and tranny flushed, Fuel filter changed, new plugs and plugwires, and I also had them send it to an alignment shop as well.

THE BOTTOM LINE HERE IS TAKE CARE OF YOUR TRUCK AND IT WILL TAKE CARE OF YOU.
