Default Enough muscle

I am in the market for a late 90's - early 2000's extended cab ranger. I will be towing a utility trailer and a 17' fibreglass boat. In your opinion, will the 2000 series 4 cylinder engines coupled with a 5 spd manual transmission handle these jobs? For simplicity and fuel economy, I would like to go with this power combination but if it won't do the job because of lack of power, I will shop for 6 cyl models. What are your experiences with this combination?

The utility trailer, yes. The boat, probably. Check on the ford website there is a section where you can look up owner's manuals and their towing capacities. I think they are under support at the bottom of the page. Then you want to click on "in your glove box" or something similar to that. The U.S. manuals do not metion towing capacity when towing trailers with brakes (surge or electric), you can pretty much tow double the rating if the trailer has them. To give you some buffer room, I would round down.

It might tow it ok, but you will def. have to stay out of 5th gear while towing. The bigggest thing I ever towed with my 4 cyl ranger was a small sheep trailer (only holds 2 sheep). It had some trouble going up small, south tx, hills. I would look for a v6 for towing, IMO. The 4 banger might get the job done, but the 6 will make it better on the driver.
