how much can a ranger with a 2.5l auto tow
I am looking at trading my beretta for a pop-up camper and i want to know how much a 2001 ranger reg cab 2.5l with an auto transmission can safely tow.
I see the bumper on mine has a bolt hole for a ball, how strong are these? i have a ball, but i do not want to pull my bumper off or bend it.
u-haul quoted me $165 for a class 3 hitch installed plus she did not know how much the wiring would cost or any extras.
thank you

Re: how much can a ranger with a 2.5l auto tow
I would suggest the hitch.
I think the bumper is rated at like 300 pounds

Re: how much can a ranger with a 2.5l auto tow
Look in your manual for specifics but I think the max tow limit is listed as 1,580 pounds.

Re: how much can a ranger with a 2.5l auto tow
manual, novel idea.
ok, i am looking at page 144 in the 2001 ranger manual. this is confusing as all heck, one manual, so many models.
it looks like i can tow 2,198 lbs.
do i have this right?
what i think is strange is the 2.3l can tow 100 lbs more then the 2.5l. how does that work out?

Re: how much can a ranger with a 2.5l auto tow
the 2001 Manual doesn't even list a 2.5L https://www.flmowner.com/servlet/Con...wnerGuidePage.
The closest I can get you to your set up is on page 150, 4X2 w/ auto transmission under the 2.3L which lists 2,260 lbs. Since you apparently don't have the stock engine, I would defer to a manual that lists the 2.5L. https://www.flmowner.com/servlet/Con...d&model=Ranger
page 84 in the 1998 owner's manual, 4X2 2.5L w/ automatic; 2,220 lbs. One thing the U.S. manauls do not mention is that you can basically double the towing capacity IF the trailer has brakes (I wouldn't go more than 4,000 lbs to be on the safe side though).

Re: how much can a ranger with a 2.5l auto tow
I would go and check the dry weight of the trailer first and then the weight of the trailer when loaded then check the manual for the truck. Some people forget to do that and just hook it up to the truck loaded and a way they go. If your very sierouse about the camper take your truck to it and hook it up and have a look at the way it sits on the back of the truck . And do a few practise tows with the trailer hooked up to the truck.

Re: how much can a ranger with a 2.5l auto tow
Good points. People also don't pay attention to the weight distribution until they are on the high way and the trailer almost takes them out from sway.
10 - 15% of the trailer weight NEEDS to be on the tongue and make sure the tongue weight doesn't exceed the capacity of the hitch or the bumper, which ever way the OP is thinking of going.

Re: how much can a ranger with a 2.5l auto tow
i hear you magnus.
i know the bed is a little over 1200 lbs and it can tow 2100 lbs
i just talked with the owner and the pop-up camper weighs just under 1200 lbs. so i think with the kayak, beer, bikes, and other crap i should be good. it looks like i can get a class 2, u-haul has had the lowest price, i called the local small guys and i can save $65-$150. irony the most expensive was a place i did a pro bono radio commercial for in college as a project.
i will in the future be pulling a smaller trailer under 1000 lbs full of bee hives if my business plan works out and the hives i have now have a 50% survival rate.
i am starting to think maybe i should have bought the V6 i was looking at, i wanted the best gas milage, maybe i fogged my vision? i guess if i do not have enough power i could barrow grandma (pristine, after i detailed it) F-150, but that is a gas guzzler, but awesome as only a car that get a few thousand miles put on it a year. mostly from me.

Sounds like you are good to go then for what you are looking to do. The only thing I would suggest is looking at a class III hitch so you have the 2" receiver. There are a lot more options available with them compared to an 1 1/4" receiver.

the class 3 was only $165 the class 2 was not much less.
i am also going to use it for a bike rack, i guess i should see what size those come in first. eh.

Re: how much can a ranger with a 2.5l auto tow
Depends on how many bikes. You can get a rack that holds up to three in 1 1/4" Stuff like tow hooks and cargo baskets are typcally 2" (not that you'd need a cargo basket with a truck). A good site to get a good idea what is out there is www.etrailer.com.

Re: how much can a ranger with a 2.5l auto tow
i would recomend getting a hitch. not using the bumper... i pulled a 6x12 uhaul home from california. trailer empty weighted 1800 lbs. fully loaded it was not supposed to way more then 4500lbs. it was one hell of a 3 day drive but it did it like a champ.
