Default Looking to purchase Ford Ranger

In about a month, my son will get his driver's license. We have been shopping for his first truck. Tonight, we took a 1999 Ford Ranger XLT regular cab for a test drive. It was 2 wheel drive and had a 2.5 4 cylinder in it with 69,600 mile on it. Noticed the PRNDL was off by about 1 full position. Is this something to be concerned over or is there a quick fix for it? Also noticed when starting off there's a small whine until it goes into second gear. Lastly when we stopped at a red light there seemed to be a small amount of vibration felt holding the steering wheel. Are these things to be concerned about or not. I have a 05 F150 so its hard to compare the two. Is there anything to be concerned with this year and engine and transmission combination. He has $2100 saved and I would only have to kick in $1300 so I'm hoping we could get quite a few years out of it. Any information would greatly be apppreciated. Go Ford!!

Im guessing that the shift lever is of at some place if its in the collumn its gonna be a pain to fix if its at the firewall area and 2.5l is a pretty nice engine from what ive heard good on gas and not enough power to get him in trouble but enough so he wont get run over on the highway

I had that same problem with my pnrd12 being off one. My buddy sandman fixed it for me. It's not that hard to fix. I drove it like that for 4 years. Till he fixed it. What will he be using it for? every day driving, will he be hauling stuff in it? will he be towing stuff? Those are the questions you need to ask yourself. Good luck in your search.

Do you remember what he did to fix it? He'll be using it for a simple daily driver. He also has a kayak, so that will fit pretty nice in the back. I like the idea that its basically a two seater-cant pack a ton of buddies in it! Do you think the whine I hear is just the small 2.5 taking off.

well there are two things i can think of that would cause a whining sound it could be the fan clutch is bad and the fan is constantly on mine was like that and it almost sounded like a turbo diesel in the cab to check that just move the fan if it spins by hand easily then the clutch is good if it moves very little or dose'nt move at all you need a new fan clutch or it could be the ac compressor if you have that on ive heard that they like to do that

Thank-you for your help. These are things I will look for. Does your truck have any noticeable vibrations when stopped at red lights?

2.5 is bullet proof. The whine you hear is prolly just first gear in the auto tranny. I've heard lots of them do it, and have no problems. Don't worry about a lil vibration at idle, these trucks aren't insulated much, and the 2.5 naturally idles a lil rough. As long as the rest of the truck is clean, I say go for it.

Up here in Wisconsin you must have a seatbelt on to be in a vehicle. Also, the first 9 months after you get your license, you can only have 1 passenger that isn't immediate family.
