Default loud howl/whine under hood

During the summer/hot months (last year and this year) my '98 ranger has a loud (LOUD) howling noise after the engine is warm. Mostly stop-go traffic while the motor is under 2000 rpm. If I am at a light at about 750 rpm- loud. I'll rev the motor to about 2000 and it stops or gets quieter. I thought it was the t'mission but not sure?

Thanks for the ideas.

If its running hot it may be the fan clutch engaging to cool it off.

I had that problem. Check the IAC idle air control valve. I took mine off and cleaned it out and it worked for a little while but then I eventually had to go buy a new one. It costs about 70 bucks.

Might check the power steering pump. Mine was loud and had to replace it. Smell the oil that will tell you if that's a possible problem.

just clean out the IAC with throttle body cleaner and and a Q-tip, let it soak for 5 mins and the howl will be gone. they tend to get sticky over the years.
