Default 2003 XL regear question

If you change the rear end gearing with either new gears or a whole rear end swap, is there anything in the computer that needs changed? I'm assuming the VSS sends a signal but does the computer need a change to interpret it correctly?

I would think that changing the rear axle gearing is similar to changing tire size. Other than the speedometer and odometer being off, no problem.

Yep, What he said. After a gear and/or tire size change

the odometer and speedometer can easily be corrected for accuracy going onward by using even a basic handheld tuner.

Thanks dvrich and Logan03CO

It pretty sure it will be fine mechanically. I already have to do the math for my 5% larger tires. I was hoping to not have to do any more math with the gear change. Does the VSS get it's signal from a tone ring in the rear end? If so then I shouldn't have to make any computer adjustments. If not then I'm not sure. I think the tach is controlled by the ECM so that should adjust itself.

i believe starting in 2001, the speedometer receives a signal from the output speed sensor via the magnetic pickup sensor located on the transmission... the pcm then interprets this data from the output speed sensor and corrects it based on the programmed tire size and gear ratio.

This is why many people look for a handheld tuner that can modify this setting so mathematical calculations of any kind are no longer necessary. You can also order a custom tune that is pre-programmed and setup for your specific tire and gear ratio combination.

Thanks everyone.

I know what gear ratio I'm looking for and what the axle code is. What I can't find is what configuration Ranger they may have come in. Knowing that would make searching the junkyards or online so much easier.

Does anyone have a clue what Rangers (or possibly Explorers) may have had axle code F4 (7.5" L/S 3.45) or F5 (7.5" L/S 3.55) or a code 95 (8.8" open 3.55) ?
