I am new here and I am thinking of getting into a ranger soon, probably early to mid 00's. I am just wondering if there's any years/models to stay away from or common issues to look out for.
I'm leaning towards a manual rwd 2.3 or 3.0 extended cab if such thing exists. I've owned an escape, focus and mazda 3 all with the same 2.3 so I'm pretty familiar with it but the extra power from a 3.0 would be nice.
Just looking for a bit of insight on these trucks, thanks in advance!

In my honest opinion, try to go with an '02 or newer, apparent timing chain issue fixed for that model (if I remember the year correctly

And definitely try to pick up a 4.0, that motor is the best, and gas mileage isn't as different, every engine option in those years are terrible on gas

I agree with Chevy_Country. 2002 or newer, v6 is preferred for the power and gas mileage.

My truck is an 09 model, 2.3 four banger with manual tranny. Gas mileage is terrible, but for my use, it has plenty of torque and power. Slow to get up to speed, but hauls heavy loads quite well.

i bought a 96 ranger that had 38000 miles on it that I still have it has 230000 miles on it and still gets 25 miles I had to get another one because the cab floor won't pass inspection I bought a 2008 with 50000 and it too is 2.3 5 speed love these trucks. The 96 is still my baby hate to scrap her.
