I like to say the Frontier of today is the Ranger of yesterday: unloved, forgotten about, irrelevant in then markets pickup truck marketplace. YES it is bigger.....but I find it perfect sized for me. Every vehicle model of to day is much larger than it was 20 years ago.....think Focus the size of yesterdays Fusion, the next Fusion the size of yesterdays Taurus, Taurus the size of yesterdays Crown Victoria, etc. The Fiesta is the size of yesterdays Focus/Escort.
No way in hell would it be getting a diesel. 1: GM twins have TERRIBLE reliability issues. 2: F150 3.0 Powerstroke isn't selling (my dealership has sold literally a SINGLE unit....). 3: it isn't needed and cost preventative. It's plenty powerful with the 2.3L Ecoboost. Again, leaps and bounds better than what we know Ranger to be. Most whom scream to the hills for this or that, don't buy the product....a half ton diesel is one of them at least when it comes to the blue oval.
What we got is a stop-gap that was cheap to FoMoCo and quick to market while the market for mid-size pickup is sizzling hot.......while already deep into development into it's replacement. Remember, what we got has been around since 2011 in the world market outside of the US and Canada. Just a new combination of which has been tested and tried and true for a number of model years thus far. Rumor is 2022 is the year of the all new Ranger for ALL of the world market....likely taking care of the short comings of the 19+ Ranger. Likely addressing the "world" overall body shape, lack of flat floor, lack of engine options, etc. The Bronco R Baja 1000 rig is sporting a 2.7L V6 which hints at possible v6 combinations of the "T7"? chassis type to fit it. Currently the modified T6 we have is in-line engine fitting compatibility only because of how narrow the chassis is.
Overall as a long time old Ranger owner whom has grown up some, I 100% dig the sh!t out of the new Ranger. Like I said above, I find it perfect sized. But hesitant waiting for features the F150 has like the flat floor and more traditional shapes/greenhouses/upward sloping beltline, etc. It is still a great truck. You don't hear hardcore Tacoma owners whining about the 05+ era.....aka the most popular Tacoma era EVER.....or 04+ F150 guys whining about how DAMN good 15+ F150's are...

An incredibly biased review/opinion, I’ve owned both ranger and Colorado, and current Colorado is, of course, in my opinion, better. Only thing ranger has is better tech options, that, in my opinion, aren’t necessary in a pickup, luxury suvs are for features.
The twins “reliability issues” are with v6 gas, the minimax is a great engine and very few have issues from what the forum reads, and we all know the forum seems to speak only negative
You have to remember this ranger is old as dirt, they’ve been making this 3rd gen ranger in other countries since 2013, and most say how they can tell, ride experience is something most reviews show horribly for ranger, gladiator and Tacoma ruin the twins and ranger, but a much different price point for those trucks
I’m going to do my own comparison soon, I mean, hell I’ve been online looking for a cheap single cab ranger to play with, miss my danger ranger so much, but I don’t believe until ranger raptor, or a V6 option is available am I going to be able to make the switch back, I wouldn’t even look at a power smoke ranger lol jk
