My 2015 F150 needs new tires. I located 4 wheels with Michelin tires on craigslist for next to nothing. The tires have 2500 miles and the wheels are the contractor type 17" steel wheels.

I simply wanted the Michelin tires dismounted and put on the alloy wheels that came stock on my truck.
The service advisor told me $200 and I said bye bye.
I went to Discount Tire and they did the job for a fraction on that.

I guess if you live in a well to do area they assume you will not question anything.

Why did you think the dealership would be even remotely close to the price of a discount tire shop?

Mainly the dealership didn't want to do it in case something would go wrong. They didn't want the liability.

Dealership is charging you a labor rate and the tire shop is charging you flat rate or per diem.. simple

Ford dealers will match prices on new tire installation and not mounting and dismounting customer supplied tires.

My "stealership" is priced LESS than Discount Tire and the other big name brand tire shop in the region (Les Schwab). We charge $15 per dismount/mount/balace....aka $60. Discount is $18 ea and Schwab is $20 ea....and they vary based on tire size. We don't. Some other shops won't touch used rubber anyway.

Aka find a local Ford QuickLane in your area.

Most dealerships whom don't have a QuickLane will charge a premium for the service you are looking for.

The dealership offered you shop rate because of possible liability of you coming back on them later if there turns out to be a hidden problem with the tire. That and they might have been trying to help out their mechanics. They get screwed over enough from the manufacturer on warranty and recall work.
