Default Pro & con of new 2019 crew 4x4

I don’t have one thinking about one to replace my car
What is real gas mileage?
What you think life of engine would be with no trailer towing?

Thanks deerspy

It looks like real world mpg for those who drive faster than 55 mph on highways is around 19. To actually get the advertised, 23 mpg, one would need to be driving 55 mph or less on a U.S or State Route with no stop and go traffic. No reports have been made on city mpg.

Given that the truck is larger all around than the Ranger it replaced and added a full rear seat, 19 mpg is not an unreasonable number. My 2011 4X4 XLT Supercab gets only slightly less.

No truck is going to get car mpg, if that is what you are shooting for. The closest you might get is with a Government Motors Chevy Colorado/GMC Canyon with a diesel, assuming you want to pay the diesel upgrade cost and more expensive routine maintenance that comes with a diesel. I think they are supposed to get something close to 30 mpg.

Considering that the OVER OPTIMISTC EPA sticker for your car is 16 city and 24 hwy, I would say buy a calculator.
Do you drive 45 mph downhill all the time?
If you get 26 mpg from a 4000 lb 4.6L Crown Vic then you should get between 35 and 40 mpg from a 2.3L ecoboost Ranger. LOL

Keep in mind it will probably want 93 all the time, so the fuel efficiencies will be negated by the price tag of fuel.

I finally got my custom ordered truck. It's only been about a week, so I'm still working through and getting familiar with the truck. On the fuel, it only requires 87 octane. They do recommend bumping up the octane if you are going to be doing heavy hauling or towing to get the pest performance and power. So for, I haven't found the power to be wanting.

Length wise, it's about the same as my 2011 extended cab. It is wider. I'm not a huge fan of how small the rear window is but I'm used to using my mirrors. So the limited rear visibility out the back window isn't a huge problem. Worse comes to worse, there is the back up camera.

Room wise, it is much nicer. While I don't mind the tight quarters of the older models, the added elbow room is real nice to have with the new one.

The truck is taller. That in itself is a mixed bag depending on what you are considering at the moment.

Overall, I'm not regretting the decision to buy one.

Interesting that they run the 2.3T on 87. It is detuned so I suppose it makes sense.

I have never understood all the folks on here that say the sticker mileage is "over optimistic". If you can't beat the sticker then maybe you could change your driving habits?

https://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/noframes/18871.shtml

I routinely get 30 mpg out of my regular cab 2003 2.3l 5-speed stick. Hell, when I recently got a tank that averaged 27+ I reached down while still at the pump and felt the right front wheel was pretty hot. Yep, brake was hanging up a bit and I still beat the "over optimistic" EPA sticker. And that's driving both down hill and up.

Fixed the brakes and now I'm back to 30 mpg.

Oh Deer: 2003 XL 2.3L 5-speed stick w/OD. Current mods: Body work after hitting a deer 12 hours after I bought it. Averaging 32 MPG on the highway.

It depends on where you drive. Most interstates are higher than the 55 mph test speeds done to get the advertised mpg Ford publishes. If you drive predominantly 55-60 mph or less, you will meet or beat the published mpg. Anything faster than that, you generally will not unless the moon and stars align just right.

I see about 21+ mpg when doing long trips at the 70 mph posted speed limit on the interstates. Only once or twice have I gotten the advertised 23 mpg a 2011 Supercab XLT 4X4 with a manual transmission and 3.73 is supposed to get.

That being said, we are driving an unaerodynamic brick. We aren't going to get the mpg of a Ford Focus or Honda Civic.

I agree. Rangers are aero-be-damned, but it doesn't have to be as bad as everyone makes out. Most people getting bad mileage could improve by just improving their driving habits and routine maintenance. I crush the highway mileage ratings, but 80% of my driving IS 55 mph on two lane blacktops. 10% 65-70 mph and the rest in town. But I also shift at no more than 2500 rpm and watch my speed. No jack rabbit starts and no NASCAR passing on the interstate. Routine oil changes and filters.

Just filled up again today and had my second best tank ever. 445 miles on 13.46 gallons. That's 33 mpg. Truck is stock other than a cheap vinyl tonneau cover and 235/75/15 tires. It is possible, you just want to have to want to get it done.
