Default Blown Engine?

So, a few months ago I bought an old 1996 Ranger for my grandson who was living with me, he's now back home. Same day he leaves, another grandson's 2002 Ranger quits, looks like severe overheating. Guess who's driving the old Ranger and guess who's shop the newer Ranger is at? Mechanic said $3900 for another engine plus radiator & water pump. Dad's had enough, this is the 4th car this kid has had problems with.

I made a few checks yesterday. Looks like the water pump blew up, can't keep the radiator full for more than a minute or so. Can't see where the leak is until we get the radiator out. Compression in the 30-40 psi except for #1 cylinder which has 70 psi. All cylinders spitting water. Oil milky. Guess I'll strip it down and pull the heads, but it's starting to look like it may be time for another flex fuel engine.

I've never seen steel heads blow the gaskets on all the cylinders at once, this thing must have been red hot by the time he pulled over. I'll check them for warpage but I'm not hopeful and the car's been sitting with water in the cylinders for 2 weeks now. Crap, I've got my own stuff to work on. At least he has a job and can pay for it and he is doing all the labor.

Anyone ever have a situation where all compressions were down at the same time?

I'd say that engine is toast. Would be much faster to get a good salvage yard one or buy a rebuilt one. It's probably cracked all over so I wouldn't waste too much time on it.

Got it partly torn own today. Right hand head looks really good, but it has about .009" clearance between #1 and #3 cylinder. Block also looks good but also has about .009" clearance between #1 and #3 cylinders. The head gasket didn't show any signs of damage and the head bolts were tight, but the gasket did have a bow to it when it was removed. So far not finding any engines in my area (Central FL) except remans ($2k), being a flex fuel engine seems to make it rare.

There is a good assortment of used and reman 3.0 engines for the 2000 Ranger out there, but not many for the flex fuel engine. Does anyone know what is involved in making a regular 3.0 work if swapped into a car that had the flex fuel engine?

The engine actually looks good, had the heads rebuilt getting ready to put it back together. I bought a Fel-Pro head gasket kit, #HS 9902 PT-3 on Amazon. I cross referenced the kit through the parts houses and they say the kit is for up to 7/99. Post 7/99 would be kit HS 9902 PT-4. We wanted to start tomorrow. Does anyone know what the difference is between the engines before 7/99 and after 7/99?
