Default Why is Truck MPG so Low?

The mileage on my Ranger is only 10 MPG. What are the possible reasons for this? I'm going to be taking an auto shop class this spring and I thought it'd be a good idea to know in advance what to learn at the college to see what I can do to solve this problem.

About 10 million reasons... one thing you'll learn in shop class is diagnosing automotive problems is a very very very annoying process when the customer only gives you vauge useless info. Yes I'm mocking you but dont take it personally lol. Diagnostic work is 90% of modern auto repair, and gathering info is key to diagnosing.

Gather info. When did the issue start? Progressively over time or suddenly? Whats the maintenance record on the vehicle? Has anything been repaired recently before the issue? Is the check engine light on? Does the check engine light work? Are there any codes if so? Are there any other symptoms? Do you just drive like a crazy person with a bed full of junk?

Reasons include everything from a literally just worn out engine to bad tires and millions of things in between.

I think the problem is probably progressive, but I really have no idea. It's not like the mileage was checked periodically. The check engine light comes on periodically, but I haven't seen that light in awhile. Can you give me a general system to look in? Something to keep an eye on? A drop from 20 mpg to 10 mpg is a huge drop, so I don't think something like bald tires will give that big a drop.

Plugs, wires, sea foam treatments in air intake, gas and oil.. (refer to you tube for sea foam treatments) all that brought my gas mileage up

The system that uses burning fuel and air to create rotational force would be the main one.

Air filter, fuel filter, spark plugs and wires, a caliper that is dragging, bad or wrong oil, locked up fan clutch, dirty O2 sensors, dirty MAF sensor, all are simple things that can can cause bad fuel mileage and poor performance. You just have to get your hands dirty and start checking things out.

Right foot shoe or chancla or barefoot skin downward pressure on right most pedal at bottom near floor when the engine is running controls how much fuel delivery is called for.

Need the following to get like new mpg:

New fuel filter
New aftermarket shocks as the OEM shocks are frieken heavy.
New thermostat.
Fresh green coolant.
New air filter
Fresh engine oil
New oil filter
Fresh tranny fluid
Fresh wax job on the truck
Wax the windshield.
Polish headlights.
Polish any corner amber lights housings.
Fresh diff fluid
Fresh power steering fluid
New motorcraft plugs
New NGK plug wires
Clean MAP sensor, CLEAN MAF sensor, CLEAN IAC VALVE
All new O2 sensors.
Spot on alignment
Non dragging brakes
Freshly lubed wheel bearings and NOT TOO TIGHT ADJUSTMENT
No more than half tank of gas.
No more than half of washer fluid.
Dump the spare tire, if you have a flat call roadside assistance.
Dump the spare jack, again roadside assistance.
Keep the stock lug nut wrench for safety.
Stock size tires all seasons and balanced.
Remove unnecesary weight from the truck.
Driver needs to lose weight too.
Keep it under 55mph.
Get rid of HID lights since ballasts add weight.
Dump the acid battery and install the largest
MOTORCYCLE 12 VOLT DC LITHIUM BATTERY YOU CAN FIND AND USE ZIP TIES TO SECURE IT.
Dump any towing hitch or towing ball.
Dump audio amps and dump the subs.
Dump the mechanical belt driven fan and go electric fan.
SLOWLY ACCELERATE AND PISS OFF OTHER DRIVERS.
Maybe maybe dump antisway bar and links but will need to be a grandpa driver as it can be dangerous, YOUR CALL ON THIS ONE, not recommended on stock suspension, stiffer coil springs maybe maybe on this one...
Use chevron fuel or shell.
Am i missong something? Im sure someone can add to the list.
