Default Any thoughts on Rangers vs Nissan D21 (Hardbody)

Helllo again all,
I know this is a Ranger Forum so this is more directed at those who enjoy mechanics in general and less at die-hard Ranger enthusiasts who only like Rangers. I've no brand/model loyalty but that doesn't mean I don't think Rangers are great.

I wondered if anyone here has had a Nissan D21 (Hardbody) before and if so, how did it compare to your Ranger?

I saw an early 90's D21, rear wheel drive, with manual transmission and it looked awesome.

I think part of the charm of a Ranger is that parts are easy to come by, I wonder if D21 parts are available- anyone know? Are there are Ranger parts which commonly fail and are hard to find? Also, I've seen what I believe is the only D21-related thread here already and it didn't mention parts availability (buying a used mini-truck; nissan hardbody or ford ranger?)

Thanks in advance.

The nissan/datsun trucks have a pretty big and loyal fan base so info is definitely out there. Parts on the other hand; tons of parts are still available in box stores like autozone etc. The place where the nissans will fall short on parts availability vs the ranges is A. Junkyard parts since you simply don't find as many nissans in junkyards, and B. Extremely oddball dealer only parts. Ford keeps an amazing inventory of older vehicle parts where nissan simply does not.

People manage quite easily to keep the old nissan/datsun trucks running so if you really like the truck, parts availability would not concern me in this instance. They aren't as common as rangers but no where near uncommon enough to worry about parts.

When the Nissan pickups were called "HardBodies", the sheet metal was so fragile you could cause a dent by lightly leaning on one.
The Frontiers changed the game for Nissan.

A former boss of mine had a Hardbody and the thing was indestructible. We beat the snot out of it, racked up 200k on it and never had any breakdowns or parts replacement outside of brakes and tires. Really good trucks.

I will say the 09 Ranger I have is far more comfortable as it is bigger inside.

Big question: Where are you located?

I'm a GM guy, but I bought the Ranger because it was the only small sold here within 5 years of me buying it. If you live in a place where rust isn't an issue, I'd take a hardbody over a V6 Ranger. If you live in somewhere that rust is an issue, most hardbodies you'll find are only days away from folding in half due to frame rust. They like to fold right where the cab meets the bed. Rangers rust pretty hard too, but I haven't seen frames bend like that on Rangers, and there's quite a few newer Rangers still around which don't have that much rust even in more rust-prone climates.

I hadn't heard about Nissan's having that issue, but Toyota did. They had a huge recall of Tacoma's due to cheap metal in frames, rusting and trucks folding in half. YouTube videos of it are pretty common. Plenty of people have cleaned and rust proofed their Ranger frames just to avoid this.

Nissan Frontiers never had a rusting out problem but they sure did have auto transmissions blowing up due to leaking radiators allowing coolant into the ATF.
