heater hose/water pump questions

Hey guys,
I have a 98 Ranger, 3.0 , manual shift with AC.
My son has had the truck for a few years. He put a water pump in it and after that the heater didn't work.
Now, I have it back and the water pump is leaking so it's time for me to get it all working again.
The 2 hoses that come from the firewall that have the tees?
The hoses that are branched off of the tees are not connected to anything and I'm not sure where they go. I looked at the manifold but I don't see anything that looks like it's missing a hose.
The hose with the heater control valve goes to the water pump.
The hose without the control valve goes to the side of the thermostat manifold.
Could those be backwards?
A few months ago I tested the heater by taking the hose off between the control valve and the firewall, and I ran the engine. Water flows through the heater core fine. It's not clogged up. When I did that test I had heat.
SO that leads me to believe that I have the same pressure in both hoses coming from the water pump. ????
can ya help me out?
I'll take some pics before I take it apart, but I really need to get it working again,

OK,
I have the water pump off and got a better look at everything,
I can't believe I drove from Houston to San Antonio and back with the water pump in that condition without it overheating. It couldn't possibly be moving much water.
Maybe that's why the heater wasn't working last winter?
The truck doesn't get much use. It's my spare...

Got the water pump back on.
I was hoping someone would let me know if the heater hoses were plumbed right.
I installed them in the opposite positions, thinking the heater control valve should stop the hot water before it gets to the heater core.
I learned that the connection right on the water pump is not an outlet but it's in the same cavity as the pumps main inlet, SO, that's the return side.
Oh,
And I got rid of the elbow on the right side by the thermostat. I put in a short straight one, and used a piece of hose that is a molded 90.
Now, if/when it leaks I won't have to spend all day getting that stupid bracket off of the front of the engine.
I also got rid of the tee's in the heater hoses.

Plumbing looks okay. I'd check the function of the heater control valve to make sure heater core gets flow when it should, or delete it all together.(personal choice). Also, read up on burping the system. It's going to have air and won't be efficient until it gets purged.

I had the same “ninja throwing star” corroded water pump on my 2000 2.5L. Battled no heat for a whole winter season.

I think basic convection keeps the engine from over heating.

Also believe the pump helps out but doesn’t have enough thrust to get the hot water up to the heater core.

If it’s that rusty inside, you may want to look at running something like Thermocure through it to get rid of the internal block rust.

heater valve should be in the line from the thermostat housing it is there to stop hot water when you are using AC early did come with this valve it was installed after customers complained about AC performance
