Default Increasing power on a 96 2WD 4.0 OHV ranger?

I have a 96' ranger i'm looking to increase the power on.


I'm already planning to switch from 3.73 to a 4.10 diff and add a transmission cooler (to handle the higher RPM)

What would the cost difference be between swapping out the axel as a whole vs just replacing and aligning the gears/spider?


In addition to that, I'm humoring the idea of super/turbo charging the engine.
What are some of the most common options available for a 4.0 OHV in increasing the engine power ~20-30% or so?

Also, I currently have 120,000 on the engine, would I likely need to rebuild the engine in order to accommodate the boost?

You should already have an aux trans cooler, the oem "cooler" is garbage. It should be the first thing you do when you buy a truck with an automatic.

4.10 is a common ratio in the rangers so in my opinion swapping complete rears with a good used unit would be easier and cheaper than buying and installing new gears in most cases. You may even be able to find one with disc brakes as well as a bonus. Remember your speedo will be off and you will lose some highway mpg's.

Not sure on the turbos but their are definitely supercharger kits for the 4.0, however supercharging a 22 year old motor with 120,000 miles probably wont end well. The transmission wont love it much either. It all comes down to how much money you have to throw around and what you really want from the truck. If it's your daily driver and your on a budget your going down a very dark path lol.

For the cost of rebuilding and supercharging a 4.0 you could probably do a pretty nice 5.0 swap and not be sacrificing any reliability.

Can you reccomend a good cooler kit? Also, the speedometer is controlled via a replaceable/recalibratable sensor IIRC?

I've always used Hayden universal coolers. They are cheap but get the job done. I believe the one on my 09 ranger is an 11" x 7" which is a good fit in front of the condenser and cost under 50 bucks.

As for the speedo, all years can be re-calibrated fairly easily. Some are replaceable gears, some can be done with a proper obd2 scanner, some are sensors or magnets that can be swapped. Im not 100% sure what style system was used in 96 so I can't be specific but at any rate, its never a big deal.

Thanks, I've added the cooler to my purchase list for next month.

For now it seems like I should prioritize the 4:10 read diff. I'll leave the engine itself alone for now.

I'll look into engine options, but you guys make a valid point about the transmission. The transmission was pretty neglected before I got the vehicle so I probably shouldn't push it too much harder until I set a side some money to replace the transmission if it were to break.

The 4r55e (your transmission) is not a "weak" transmission and they can last a long time but they are not really heavy duty either. They are what they are, a low power light truck transmission. I wouldn't say one with 120,000 is going to take a crap on you, but if it didn't get regular maintenance I definitely wouldn't be putting any unnecessary strains on it. Most guys who go the high performance route will use the much beefier T-5 manual trans or an AODE/4R70W automatic trans found in mustangs and F-150's.

Are the bellhousings on those transmissions as well as the V8 5.0 the same (will bolt to) a 4r55E and vise-versa?

no the bellhousings are in fords infinite wisdom the change bolt patterns when they change the engine production to a new design I wish they had picked a bellhousing bolt pattern in the 50's like Chevrolet did and stuck with it.just my rant

I would estimate from my reading of this forum, major projects are completed at a 5% rate. That rate might be higher if the parents would allow junk parts vehicles all over the back yard.
