Default regearing question

Searched the forum for threads on regearing- but I can't make sense of the info yet because I'm a newbie to this. Basically I went from stock tires to 31s a few months ago and when calculating my MPG was told that my odometer is off because of the increased tire size. Need to regear to fix it.

Questions:
About how much would my odometer be off by?
Regearing from what to what? How do I know what gear I have now, and how do I know what to regear to?
Is it easy enough to regear? Or not worth the effort?

Thanks y'all!

You'll find your gear ratio on your axle tag or door code. If I can find the picture I've got to read the door tag, I'll post it. Changing the gear is best left to professionals or someone who's done it before, many times. You might get a new axle with the correct gear ratio that also has a limited slip, if your current truck doesn't have one.

Here's a link to a calculator I use. I know when I get 33's the recommended gear ratio is 4.08, but 4.10s are close enough and readily available.

Thanks. Guess I'm at a 3.73 though I still can't tell what I 'should' be at now. The first link showed different ratios for different purposes, but doesn't tell me what will put it back to correct odometer.

EDIT velociranger's calculator showed me needing to get to a 4.4 sound about right?

Your speedometer and odometer are off by the percent difference between you stock tire and your current tire overall diameter.

Depending on your engine size and gear ratio (found on door rage or axel tag), regearing probably isn’t necessary for 31” tires.
It can be very expensive expensive to regear, especially if your truck is 4wd.

You can, however, correct your speedometer and odometer without regearing. This can be done with a hand held programmer/tuner or, since 31” tires were a factory option on some trucks, a dealer should be able to correct it as well.

All good info! Found out my odometer is off by about 116%, that is its actually going 23mph when it reads 20.
Fun Math:

1.16x129(miles driven at last fillup)/9.8(gallons put into tank) looks like I'm getting about 15.1 miles per hour- MARGINALLY better than the 13.5 I thought I was getting!

Anyway, thinking I'll hold off on regearing. It;s a 2wd and so long as I know the difference in odometer I can adjust accordingly.
