Default Catastrophic Failure, but what could it have been?

Hi guys
Just took a brand new off the lot Ford Ranger XLT 3.2L Auto for a test drive with a view to buying it. Was accelerating from the motorway on ramp onto the motorway doing 55 mph about to merge when the vehicle had a catastrophic mechanical failure of some description.

Basically the vehicles brakes appeared to have locked up all round bringing the vehicle to a complete stop from 55 mph sliding us sideways into the guard rail with absolutely no control over the vehicle whatsoever. The vehicles engine was still running however the transmission was not engaging and would not go in forward or reverse. There was a distinct smell of burning rubber after the incident!.
I am not mechanically minded but need some insight into what this could possibly have been as I am now facing potential legal action from the dealership for the damage to their vehicle. Are there any known faults or is this some other mechanical failure

Thanks in advance!

Something was defective or not put together properly. Likely something came loose inside the transmission or transfer case and caused it to lock up all 4. Could have been a malfunction in the ABS braking system also. Since these trucks just hit the lots, it may be awhile before anyone really knows them well enough.

I've wondered myself what happens if you crash on a test drive. I would say the dealership would have insurance for that. Proving that it wasn't your fault could be tricky. They will likely badger you into saying the wrong thing thus making it your fault. Best of luck to you! Glad you weren't hurt in the wreck.

If it was a brand new 2018 model, it likely has been sitting for a little while, but I wouldn't think a year would be long enough for calipers to lock up...

They have investigated and all indications are pointing to a blown Diff... They know that much, they just don't know why. At least they have found a mechanical problem and we won't be blamed!

If you were in the US I'd only have one thing to say; Retain a lawyer regardless.

Seems like you got lucky in more ways than one.

Someone hungover and forgot to torque one of the ring gear bolts.
