Default Switching to a Ranger???

Hi all, well I have only had Toyotas up until now but I am looking at buying a used Ranger. So I have A LOT of questions!
Hope I'm posting in the correct area!
I am looking at a 2000 Ranger, 87,000 miles. I'm not sure of the exact body model but its a 6 cyl. with the 3.0 engine. It says '4X4 Off Road' on the side of the bed. It also says 'flex fuel'. And it came with the running boards on it. It currently has 15's on it.

#1 How does the Ford 3.0 V6 compare to the Toyota 3.0 V6?
#2 Can I put chains on the front tires?
#3 What is the actual ground clearance?
#4 Can I put 16's on this?

This will be a hunting rig, lots of off road, dirt, dust, mud and heavy snow driving (I often chain all four).
Will I be happy making the switch? Anything else anyone can tell me about Rangers - especially compared to Toyotas?
Thank you!

The Ranger 3.0 is a reliable engine but it's not a power house, if you're looking for power get the 4.0.

Don't see why not.

No idea. Plus it would depend on the tire/wheel setup.

Rangers cost a lot less. Get the 4.0.

yea def get the 4.0 and if you can get 8.8 in rear with 4.10 gears because it would help if you want to put bigger tires on..but the rangers have torsion bars causing a tougher ride just thought id let ya know that

Hi all, thanks for responding!
Its not that I'm looking for power but if its comparable in power to the 3.0 V6 Toyota it will work just fine for me as thats what I've been driving for years.
As far as the chains on the front tires I know some models of trucks you cannot put chains on the front because their is not enough room between the side of the chain and the brake system etc., not sure if the Ranger is one of those?

dunno about the chains..well the toyota v6 is a 3.4l and has a 190hp and the ranger 3.0l is 150 hp while the 4.0l is 160 hp but in 2001 the rangers 4.0l went up to 207hp

I thought the V6 in Toyota trucks is also a 4.0? My mom has a '09 Tacoma but her's has the 2.7L I4 which has MORE power (5 hp to be exact) than a Vulcan V6!

yeah the vulcan 3.0 is slow, like 0-60 in 9 seconds, and doesnt get the best MPG either, buts its a tough motor. I wouldnt recommend it tho, try finding a 4.0 or 2.3 or 2.5 ranger.

Duratec 2.3. The Lima 2.3/2.5 are slow as molasses too, lol.

I was just looking it up, that 4.0 also gets better MPG than the vulcan.

I'm too poor to afford one of those new Toyotas, everyone I've had had been an 89' model and they were 3.0 engines. I'm not sure what goes in the new ones but I don't think they get as good of gas mileage.

I think you'd definitely be happy with a ranger. I would personally get the 4.0, 2.3, or 2.5 over the 3.0. The 3.0 is a great strong motor but it does lack a little in power and gas mileage compared to the Yota.

I seen no problems with you putting chains on the stock setup. You'll also have no problem putting 16's with bigger tires even.

The suspension on the rangers is going to be stiffer though due to the fact that they have a torsion bar suspension.

overall I think you'd be very happy with a ranger as your hunting rig. They are great little trucks! They are much cheaper to buy, fix, and maintain compared to the Toyota's.

Good luck with your decision making and let us know what you decide!

I agree too. You'll be more happy with the ranger. You can do way more with rangers than any other truck and they are fun to drive, especially the 4.0!
