New member, first problem, first post.

I inherited a 1991 Ford Ranger 2WD 2.3L about a year ago which I use around my property as a utility truck. Recently I tried to start it and there was fuel streaming from under the tank. I popped the bed off and discovered the fuel sending unit was completely rusted out with the pressure line rusted through…………..

To make a long story short I replaced :

Drained & cleaned tank – very clean about 1 teaspoon of water and garbage
Fuel sending unit
Pressure regulator
Fuel filter
Fuel pump relay

The engine started and I drove it out of the garage and parked it. A week later I turned the key and I noticed the fuel pump never shut off. I tried to start it but I had no kick over. I popped the bed off and started checking the system. Fuel was flowing good from the return line. Measured the fuel pressure at 45 psi with the continuously running pump. The pump off checked pressure was 41 settling to 38. Many sources on the web say the 1990 Ranger 2.3L pressure spec is 30 – 45.

A few days of testing revealed this: Exhaust does not smell like raw gas so I assume this is not good fuel bad spark problem. If I immediately try to start the engine I get no kick over. If I let the pump run for 30 seconds I get 20% kick over. If I let it run another 30-45 secs I get 50% kick over. If I let the pump run for 2 minutes the engine will start and drive at an idle but no power from the accelerator pedal even floored. I checked the fuel pressure while it was idling and it was 45 psi. I can’t find any vendors for my pump that lists the pressure or flow specs.

The way I figure it, all the mucking around the fuel system probably allowed contamination and I need to service the fuel injectors to restore the power and sluggish starting.

But……… That doesn’t explain the continuously running pump with 45 psi after the prime time has expired. Is there a part I have overlooked or haven’t found on any posts yet. I looked at endless posts around the web and they all point to one of the parts I have already replaced or tested for.
