Default 3.27 gear in a 7.5" open rear end?

Hello all.

I am contemplating a rear end swap in my 2003 XL. My goals are strictly gas mileage. I don't tow anything and only haul very light loads maybe once a month or so.

I looked up which gears were available in the same size rear end (I'm not really interested in an 8.8" swap) and decided on the 3.45 and started pricing them. I ran across this on a parts site. I have never seen a 3.27 listed in any Ranger rear end charts EXCEPT in the 8.8". Is this a mistake on the parts site or just a rare gearing only offered in a specific situation?

The 3.45 isn't all that much taller than the 3.73 I have now and the 3.08 is probably too tall. A 3.27 would be a great road cruising gear and that's where I spend most of my time.

Does anyone have any more information on a 3.27 gear in a 7.5" rear

Thanks

Ok the picture won't load and the link isn't working. I found the 3.27 here by doing a search for a 1995 Ranger rear axle assembly.

Engine will get stressed out along with tranny on such a tall ratio.

With stock size tires go 3.73 gears

Already went with the 235/75/15's. Hankook Kinergy PT low rolling resistance tires made in the USA.

Didn't some of the Rangers from the '90s come with the 3.45's and even the 3.08's? Ford wouldn't have made that an option if it meant engine and transmission problems. And those had the old Lima engine (110 hp) not the newer Duratech (140 hp).

I would stick with the 3.73....that is if you want that little 2.3 to have any power at all.
The 235/75/15s tires have already robbed enough power over the stock sized tires.
Your fuel economy should be good enough right now.

With tall gears the engine will work harder and eat up that gas quicker than an engine that is cruising easier. Also the tranny will get stressed out a lot more with tall gearing.

3.73 with stock size for the win!!!

My 2010 2.3 with 3.73 gears and 30s does o
Ok, but next tires will be 235 75 15 for a lower overall gear ratio.

I know the 93-97 4.0L would come with the 3.08 gear and with the stock tire size netted an average of 335-350 MPG if I drove it nice. but the hp & tq curve is far better with that gear and made decent use. the 4 banger would need the lower gears to compensate for the lack of both thereof. I think Tylers truck originally came with a 4.10 he said but its a newer 4 cyl too. (2006 ?)

You would prolly get the same result driving like you do perhaps, limiting yourself to that 55-60 MPH hwy speed and put 91 in your truck. I run premium in my truck because despite being 24 yrs old now. I get an extra 12-17 MPG out of a tank doing so. PROVIDED - I wasn't driving around like an asshat

Thank you Undrstm8ed. It's nice to have someone that understands. I'm pretty sure the 3.08 is way too tall with the 2.3l but the 3.45 might be an option. Even with the taller tires (235/75/15) the 3.45 would be about 2270 rpm in 4th gear at 55 mph and 2130 rpm in 5th gear at 65 mph. At 55 mph in 5th gear with the 3.45 it would drop to around 1800 rpm.

The 3.27 would be around 100 rpm lower across the board.

There is some right in this, you will have to do some consideration and due diligence of course finding out where MPG begins to sacrifice power delivery. May not be AS noticeable on flatter land but long hill inclines or mountainous areas for sure will show the losses.

Before I assume - Auto or man?

M5OD. My normal daily drive is basically flat with the occasional hill. But not so steep that I have to downshift out of 5th. Only two short hills (same hill once each direction) that need 4th gear at 55 mph.

Wish I could find a BSFC for the 2.3 Duratech. That would answer a lot of questions.
