Default 02 Ford Ranger Transmission Help

Hi Everyone,

I have an 02 3.L 4WD auto trans. I have ran in to a problem I hoping someone could help with. On a cold start (especially in winter) if I go from P to D and accelerate hard it won't go into 2nd. A couple of times I have had to pull over put it in park, back to D, then take off and it is fine. The strange thing I have noticed is if I let it coast a bit after taking off then step on the gas it doesn't have any issue. Likewise, if I accelerate hard, but let off a little before it tried to get into 2nd, it will shift fine.

No issues at all when already warmed up.

Any suggestions on this? Is this a bad sign of things to come?

Thanks!

Sorry should have specified I have owned it since 68K and it's now at 118. Since I've owned it at times I have had to baby it into 2nd gear if it is really cold out. Had a trans flush around 100K a couple years ago. Checked fluid and it was full and clean

I had a problem that sounds very similar. Not knowing exactly what the cause was I tried a few things and it is fixed.
I dropped the trans pan and replace the filter and filled with genuine Mercon V
I added Dr. Tranny Instant Shudder Fixx
My column shifter was sloppy and loose, so thinking that actually might be popping out I replaced the shift tube and bushings.

Thanks good to know I am not the only one . It is such a weird intermittent issue that just drives me nuts. It shifts like butter other than this occasional random cold start baby into 2nd.

I am pretty sure when it was flushed the filter was not changed. Perhaps I should start with the filter.
