Should I Buy This Ranger?
Howdy folks,
I'm a new poster here so please excuse me if this thread would be more appropriate elsewhere.
I'm the current owner of a 2006 Chevy Trailblazer that I have had since December of '09. It has been a hell of a vehicle, but as it is knocking on the door of 200k miles, and in need of new tires and a few small minor fixes, I feel like it may be time to move on. To be completely honest, I have been a Chevy fan my entire life - even made those lame F.O.R.D. jokes. That being said, I have started to look at used, small (they don't make these anymore, do they? ) affordable trucks that will be reliable and long lasting. I have found that the Ford Ranger perfectly fits the description of what I am looking for.
The truck - https://www.bryaneaslertoyota.com/in...yr10u16pa84640
2006 Ford Ranger Sport, regular cab, 2WD. V6 3.0
38K miles - seriously.
Clean title, 2 owners, clean CarFax.
Brand new Good Year tires.
Very clean, excellent condition. Only a few minor scuffs and scrapes.
$9,999.
The question - is this a good buy?
I took it for a test drive today and enjoyed it. One minor issue I noticed was that it seemed pretty slow for a 6 cylinder, but perhaps that is because I am used to a 4.2l? Should that be a red flag? With the low mileage, should I be worried that there could be some engine trouble because of that?
I do not need 4WD, so that is not an issue. $9,999 doesn't seem too bad for the mileage and condition, but this is a 13 year old vehicle. What would be a good deal? Seems like I could get them down closer to 9k. I'm assuming the sport is base model since it does not have power windows or doors, which is not a big deal to me - just less stuff to mess up
Thoughts?

Re: Should I Buy This Ranger?
I think it's overpriced by at least two thousand dollars. My 2006 fx4 with 78000 miles is only worth $7500. to $8500 dollars. And it's clean with no rust.

Re: Should I Buy This Ranger?
The 3.0 is not very powerful to begin with. It also has some reliability issues. Hope the owners kept the oil changed very often. $10k sounds a little high IMO

Old is old. Buy at a price in accordance with the age of the vehicle. Mileage is not something I consider valuable, and it won't entice me to pay a premium. Age of the vehicle is something that I weigh heavily and take into great consideration. Overall condition of the vehicle, what has been replaced and serviced over the years and when it was done, OEM parts or cheap after market parts, etc. Self-serviced or done by a garage or dealer? 10k is a premium price and it must be due to the mileage on the clock.

Right. So many people think that since it has no miles, it is worth double or more than the average price. It's not brand new. It doesn't have all the bells and whistles of a new truck. Plus things like hoses, belts, and rubber bushings may be getting dry rot.

Re: Should I Buy This Ranger?
i just snatched a 2001 XLT 4X4 4.0 flareside with only 74k miles new tires
amazes me that everything works...not one little light bulb
out anywhere in the vehicle . body is staight paint is great
bed liner-tow package- power windows power locks power mirrors tilt wheel
every button works.
person who owned it only drove it like twice a month...yearly service done at ford for the past 12yrs - just sat in their garage.
on and the best part...... $5000

Re: Should I Buy This Ranger?
I got a 2005 Edge 3.0 5-speed a couple years ago with only 190,000 miles on it. After I fixed the Factory Defective head valve regression problem at 221,000 miles for about $1,000.00 it runs and looks like brand new and I wouldn't trade it for the world.
The mileage had nothing to do with the soft heads and some of them started failing at 15,000 miles. Keeping that in mind, the mileage is meaningless.
Check out this technical service bulletin . The 2006's had these heads also on at least some.
Google this TSB.
MIL ON WITH VARIOUS MISFIRE RELATED DTC’S. TSB 05-26-3
P0300-P0306 AND P0316—3.0L-2V VULCAN ENGINE
Price is really determined by supply and demand on vehicles. Go to Auto Trader, put in the vehicle and the area of 300 miles from your zip and see what the prices are for comparable Rangers. Then decide. I think it is too high.

Re: Should I Buy This Ranger?
^^ the 2.3 fords were great engines. ^^ I've never owned one myself but never heard anyone complain about the mechanical end of them.
